The Nine Most Notable Lakes in the World

A collection of the nine most beautiful lakes in the world.

When researching lakes for this article I realized how little I knew about this wonderful world we live in. It is amazing what nature has provided for our pleasure. I love all the creations of nature and love learning about them. Take a trip with me to the most 10 most beautiful lakes to be found in our world.

Sixteen Lakes

Croatia holds a gem in lakes and that is Sixteen Lakes. This lake is interconnected with spectacular waterfalls. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The lakes are noted for their amazing color change.

The Boiling Lake

Morne Trois Pitons National Park is found in the Dominica’s World heritage Site which is 10.5 km east of Roseau, Dominica, on the Caribbean. This lake is unique in that it is filled with bubbling grayish-blue water and is usually covered in a cloud of vapor.

The Red Lagoon

The Red Lagoon is found in Bolivia near the border of Chile. The color of this lake is influenced by the red sediment and pigmentation of the algae that is found there. This is a shallow salt lake.

Five Flower Lake

Five Flower Lake is found in the Jiuzhaigon National Park in China. Its uniqueness comes from the many fallen trees that are found there and its water clarity. You can easily see the fallen trees. The water can be seen in different colors from yellow, green to blue.

The Dead Sea

The Dead Sea is located between Israel and the West Bank to the west and Jordon to the East. It is the deepest hyper saline lake in the world. It is the world’s second saltiest body of water after Lake Assal in Djibouti.

Lake Baikal

Lake Baikal is found in Russia and is the deepest and oldest lake in the world. It is estimated to be more than 25 million years Old. This beautiful lake is also called the “Blue Eye of Siberia”. This lake contains more water than all the North American Great Lakes combined. It is the largest, deepest freshwater lake in the world. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.

Lake Titicaca

Lake Titicaca is located on the border of Bolivia and Peru. It is the highest commercial navigational lake in the world being at 12,500 feet above sea level. It is also the largest lake in South America by volume.

The Caspian Sea

The Caspian Sea is the world’s largest inland body of water in the world. It accounts for a whopping 44% of total lacustrine waters of the world.

Lake Karachay

This is a sad lake to report on as it is totally polluted. It is found in the southern Ural Mountains in western Russia. It became a dumping site for radioactive waste. Unfortunately this lake is considered one of the most polluted spot on Earth.

I was thinking twice about including Lake Karachay but it is a solemn reminder of what can be. This lake is totally polluted and should send a message to the world of just how fragile nature can be and how we can lose that beauty we have through mankind’s carelessness.

It sort of gives the phrase “go jump in a lake” a new meaning. You’ve done your research well, as always. You’ve chosen some beautiful lakes to write about with beautiful photos.

It is hard to believe any lake can hold more water than all of the great lakes combined in America. I will have to check that out. Great article.
