The Atacama Desert

Information on the Atacama Desert north of Chile. We made a documentary on this.

It is located north of Chile, South America. The desert is near the Tropic of Capricorn so it’s quite arid. Some parts of the Atacama Desert haven’t received any rain for more than 400 years, as the dry land of the desert only receives only 25mm of precipitation annually. This desert has an area of a massive 105′200 square kilometres, almost the size of Ohio.

In these arid regions lie tribal settlements of Brazilians and other unknown nations. Believed to be around 1 million tribesmen in the Atacama today, it’s a true fact. Many tribes travel hundreds and thousands of kilometers to find clean water. Many die off dirty water dug underground.

One of the few plants in the Atacama Desert is the Giant horsetail. It’s Latin name which is commonly used in scientific research is called the Equisetum Telmateia. They are tall and evergreen and there stems are as thick as your wrist. Not many are found in the lands of the Atacama Desert.
