The Amazing Holes: Big Holes on Earth

Here are the big holes on earth which you can see from the top.

Kimberley Big Hole is located in South Africa. It is a big hole that was excavated by hand with a depth of 1097 meters. This is a mining area for diamonds. From 1866 to 1914, about 2,722 diamonds was found. This big hole in Kimberly’s surface is about 32 acres. There was about 50, 000 miners who participated in digging in this hole who were looking for diamonds.

Bingham Canyon Mine is located in Utah. This mining hole produces porphyry copper deposits. The depth of this mine is .72 mile or 1.2 km with a width of 2.5 miles and its covers about 1,900 acres. Bingham canyon was first discovered in 1850 for mining minerals.

The Great Blue Hole can be found at the coast of Belize. It is the largest underwater sink hole. It is in the circular shape with a depth of 394 feet and 984 wide. The great blue hole was a limestone cave before when the sea was on a much lower level. But as the water began to rise, the roof of the cave collapsed. This is one of the best sites for scuba diving around the world.

The Mirny or the Mir Mine is located in Siberia. This is a diamond mine and the first and the largest in the USSR. It has a diameter of 1200 meters and 525 meters deep. The Mir mine was discovered in 1955 and closed in 2004 with 50 years of operation.

The Diavek Mine is another diamond mine which is located in Canada. This mine was surveyed in 1992 but only in 2001 that the construction has started.

Lake Berryessa or other known as Glory Hole is located in Monticello, California. This is the largest lake in the Napa Valley and also used as a reservoir called the Monticello Dam.
