Savanna

Life in a Savanna.

Savannas are hot, with wide ranges of dry grassland and scattered trees. Savanna grasslands are found between tropical rainforests and the deserts. They are usually located in Africa, Madagascar, Australia, South America, India, and the Myanmar-Thailand region of Southeast Asia.  In savannas there are two seasons, dry seasons and wet seasons. The dry seasons lasts from five to six months, which occur in May and go until October. The wet seasons last from five to six months, too. However, wet seasons last from December until March. In the dry season the vegetation of the savanna dies back, while in the wet season the vegetation grows tall.

There are usually two types of grasslands, tropical and temperate. Tropical grasslands are often called Savannas. They are located near the equator, between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. Temperate grasslands are located north of the Tropic of Cancer, or south of the Tropic of Capricorn. These grasslands have hot summers and cold winters.

Rainfall doesn’t occur much in the Savanna grasslands, but when it does it rains a lot.  The wet season is during the summer and is warmer in the rainy season than in the dry season, because it is humid. In the dry seasons, about four inches of rain falls and the temperature is usually around 70°F. However between December and February, rain doesn’t fall at all. In the summer, there is a lot of rain. In Africa, the monsoon rain starts in May. About 15 to 25 inches of rain falls during this time. The average temperature during the wet season is about 85°F. It can also get as high as 120°F.

Many kinds of plants grow in wild pastures, besides grass. In the savanna, there are mostly xerophytes plants. These plants are drought resistant, which help them during the dry season. They also save up their water during wet season, so when dry season comes they can still survive. Some plants and trees include of the Acacia Tree, Baobab Tree, Senegal Gum Acacia, Candelabra Tree, Kangaroo Paw, Umbrella Thorn Acacia, River Bushwillow, Manketti Tree, Whistling Thorn, and many more. However, most savannas have less than one tree per acre. On the other hand savannas have several grass, forbs, scattered cactus, and shrubs.

The animals in the savannas have been accustomed to the food supply throughout the year. Sometimes there are abundant food and water. However at other times, there is scarce food and water. To solve this problem, many animals migrate. In the savannas, two groups of animals dominate. These are the herbivores and the carnivores. The herbivores consist of reptiles, small and medium sized mammals, birds, and insects. Some of the herbivores include of deer, aardvark, anteater, elephants, antelopes, ants, grasshoppers, buffalos, giraffes, rhinoceros, hippopotamus, rabbit, seed-eating birds, beetles, insectivorous birds, toads, ground squirrels, zebras, gazelles, and many more. On the other hand, carnivores consist of large mammals, some reptiles, and some birds. Some of the carnivores include of tigers, owls, foxes, snakes, crocodiles, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas, jackals, wild dogs, falcons, and many more.

As you can see many animals and plants live in the savannas. They know when and where to go for food when dry or wet seasons come. Also, plants are so adjusted to savannas that they save there water until wet seasons come. Even though there is not enough food and water for plants and animals, they still live there despite this problem.
