Pacific Maritime Ecozone
- Location: The Pacific Maritime ecozone is located on the British Columbia and Alberta border and the British Columbia coast.
- Vegetation: In result to the mild temperature and the immense amount of rainfall, the Pacific Maritime is known for its record-breaking tallest and oldest trees. These record-breaking trees include western red cedar, yellow cedar, western hemlock, mountain hemlock, western yew, and coast Douglas fir, although these are only a few of the many variations. Other than their well-known trees the ecozone also consists of other vegetations such as Oregon grape, arbutus, sword fern, skunk cabbage, salmonberry, devils club, re huckleberry, old man’s bear, Viola langdorfii and western bleeding heart.
- Landforms: The Pacific Maritime ecozone covers about 195000 square kilometers. The landform of the Pacific Maritime ecozone that takes up the most space are the steep and rugged Coast Mountains(1600 kilometers long and 200 kilometers wide). Another amazing landform of the Pacific Maritime is a riot which is a inlet sea between high cliffs (The Pacific Maritime riots are the longest and deepest In the entire world at 190 long and 2000 deep. Lastly another main landform is the forest, as it make up about 50 % of the whole ecozone! ( Glaciers, hot springs, flat plains and beaches can also be found in this ecozone.)
- Soils: The soil of the Pacific Maritime is a reason for the length of the trees, as it is rich and contains large amounts of humus. Though, 900m high, the soil is not very rich and nutrient filled.
- Climate: The Pacific Maritime ecozone is known for having the wettest and warmest weather in Canada, though this varies by location. In the lower Georgia Strait , there is little as 600 mm of precipitation which does not come to compare to the 3 000 mm of precipitation to the north. Though, the ecozone lacks a variation of monthly temperature (July- 12-18oC January-4-6oC.
- Animals: The creatures of the Pacific Maritime include animals, birds, fish, mollusks, amphibian and reptiles and reptiles. Many large herbivores can be found in the Pacific Maritime, such as mule deer mountain lions, wolfs and grizzly bears. Also, smaller herbivore such as American pica, hoary marmot, Townsend chipmunk and chickaree are also found din the Maritime. Aquatic animals ca also be found such as northern sea lions, elephant seals, giant beaked whales, sperm whales and blue whales. The conditions of the Pacific Maritime also permit amphibians to live as they are moist. Amphibians include garter snakes, redback salamanders and sharp-tail snakes. Insects of the Pacific Maritime, include red turpentine beetle, European earwig and spring azure.
- Environmental Issues: One of the main issues of the Pacific Maritime is the contamination of seafood, which have come in contact with toxins, viruses and bacteria. The healthiness of the seafood is also a method we use to discover how clean the water of a certain area is, as the viruses come from boat sewage agricultural runoff, septic seepage and the red tide occurrence.
