Largest Islands of the World
The following list contains the largest islands of the world that are over 250,000 km².
1. Greenland – Greenland is the largest island in the world. Actually, Australia is the largest island in the world, but as it is a contitent by itself, it does not include in this list. The whole island comes under the country of Greenland, which is an autonomous country under the Kingdom of Denmark. Greenland is also the least densely populated country in the world. Greenlands is belongs to the contient of North America.
2. New Guinea – New Guinea is the second largest island in the world. It is situated to the north of Australia. The western half of the island belongs to Indonesia while the eastern half forms the mainland of the country Papua New Guinea. People belonging to nearly a thousand different tribal groups live in this island.
3. Borneo – Borneo is the third largest island in the world. It is situated at the centre of Maritime Southeast Asia. Borneo is divided among Indonesia (Kalimantan), Malaysia (Sarawak and Sabah) and Brunei. The complete country of Brunei is situated on the Borneo island while parts of India and Malaysia are situated on this island. Borneo is surrounded by South China Sea. Borneo is famous for its cave systems. Clearwater Cave consists one of the world’s longest underwater rivers. Deer Cave is the largest cave passage in the world. It is the home to nearly three milliof bats and guano.
4. Madagascar – Madagascar island is the fourth largest island in the world. It is situated in the Indian ocean off the south east coast of Africa. Madagascar is home of 5% of the world’s plant and animal species and 80% of them are endemic to Madagascar. This island is part of the country of Madagascar, of which this island is the major part.
5. Baffin Island – Baffin Island is the fifth largest island in the world. Baffin island is in the territory of Nunavut. It is the largest island in Canada. Baffin Island has both year-round and summer visitor wildlife. This island is named after English explorer William Baffin. It is believed that this island was known to Pre-Columbian Norse of Greenland and Iceland.
6. Sumatra – Sumatra is the sixth largest island in the world. It is located in the western Indonesia. It is the largest island entirely in Indonesia. Sumatra was known in ancient times by the Sanskrit names of Swarnadwipa and Swarnabhumi due likely to the gold deposits located in the island’s highlands. The island was devastated by the great tsunami of Indian Ocean in 2004.
