International Water Decade

Do not know anything about the decade of the water? Here is all to say.

Considering that water is one of the most critical resources for the future of humanity, the General Assembly of the Organization of the United Nations decided, by Resolution No. 58/217- institute international decade of water as the period from 1 January 2005 and 31 December 2015.

Because of this, all UN member countries must deploy special policies and actions to ensure the availability and rational use of that vital resource.

The logo of the International Decade for Action “Water for Life 2005-2015 shows two horizontal waves at the bottom, from which emerge two human hands whose position emulates the shape of a fountain. From it flows a stream of water represented by a dotted line, just above divided in two hands. The slogan “Water for Life 2005-2015″ appear below the waves in the center of the image.

To get to your house, the water makes a long journey. First of all, is stored in a dam. From there he sent to the purification plant, where it is subjected to chlorination processes (eliminating algae and bacteria), alloy (to remove bad tastes and odors), sedimentation, filtration (to remove the mud) and a second color.

Then, powerful electric pumps to circulate water through a complex piping system. It takes much energy and money to pump water 24 hours a day. Finally, the water you consume at home, leading to a sewer network, and thus the cycle begins again and again.

Only 1% of the world’s water is in Africa, America, Asia, Europe and Oceania. At first glance, the water in the continents seem abundant, but in reality it is not. Water reserves on Earth are distributed as follows:

  • Oceans and seas (97%)
  •  Ice caps and glaciers (2%)
  •  Groundwater (0.75%)
  •  Rivers and Lakes (0.25%)

Only a responsible attitude can help us continue to have this resource in perpetuity.
