Five Longest Rivers of the World

The following are the five longest rivers of the world.

1. Nile – Nile is a major river that is flowing north in Africa.  It is considered as longest river in the world.  Nile has two major tributaries, White Nile and Blue Nile.  Most of the population and cities in Egypt are located near the Nile from ancient times and hence Egypt is known as gift of Nile.  The length of the Nile is 6650 Km.  Nile flows through the countries Ethiopia, Sudan, Egypt, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, and Kenya.

2. Amazon – Amazon river of South America is the second largest river by length and the largest river by volume with the total river flow greater than the next eight largest rivers combined.  Amazon river has the largest river basin in the world and accounts for about one-fifth of the world’s total river flow.  There are no bridges built over this river because most of the river flows through the forest.  The length of the river is 6400 Km.  Amazon flows through the countries of Peru, Columbia, Brazil, Bolivia, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Guyana.

3. Yangtze – Yangtze is the longest river in China and Asia and third longest river in the world.  The length of the river is 6385 Km.  Yangtze acts the dividing line between North and South China.  The Three Gorges Dam constructed on this river is the largest hydroelectric power station in the world. This river is part of the Three Parallel Rivers of Yunnan Protected Areas, which is a World Heritage Site.  Yangtze flows through the country of China.

4. Mississippi –The Mississippi River is part of the Missouri-Mississippi river system, which is 6275 Km is the longest river in United States and fourth longest river in the world.  The Missouri River flows from the confluence of the rivers Jefferson, Madison, and Gallatin and is the longest river in the US.  The Mississippi River the second longest river in the US.

5. Yenisei – Yenisei is the fifth longest river in the world with the length of 5539 Km.  Yenisei flows through the country of Russia.  The Yenisei rises in two major headstreams, the Bolshoi (greater) Yenisei and the Malyy (lesser) Yenisei.
