Canada’s Geologic Formation
How was Canada formed?
During phase one, the land now knows as Canada had been in one large chunk of land. This was the Precambrian era, which took place between 2 and 4 billion years ago. The Canadian Shield is made of Igneous rock that had come from volcanic activity. There were many rivers on the tall mountains that could be 20 thousand meters in height and at the bottom of these enormous mountains were Delta sediments like Sand, Clay and Silt. There is very few information on the life forms found during this time due to the fact that not many fossils were found giving evidence of life.
During phase two, the land had slowly endured the effects of erosion and new land has formed over the older parts of the earth. Phase two is still part of the Precambrian era, but many years later. The mountains have been eroded by snow, ice and rain. There are large amounts of pressure on the oldest layers of sedimentary rocks. Single cell organisms have began to form along with multi-cell organisms. There is also uplifting pressure on the Canadian Shield.
Phase three is the Paleozoic era which was around approximately 400 million years ago. The mountains have shrunk to 15 thousand meters. Sedimentary rocks were compressed into fold mountains. This was the time of Pangaea, because the continent started drifting towards the equator causing ice sheets to melt. Fossils have been found in the mountains of Canada.
Phase four is till the Paleozoic era, but many years later. Swamps have began to form and the mountains have take in more of the effects of erosion. New sediments have been formed and dinosaurs were said to be existent during this era. The rivers in the mountainous regions took the sediment deposits to the west.
The Mesozoic era is phase five. During this time North America was located near the equator and therefore had a pretty hot climate. The Pacific Plate and the North American Plate began to collide forming more mountains through a process called folding which is when two plates collide with each other and the land that’s in the middle of those two plates begins to rise. Dinosaurs were still around during this time and the Rocky Mountains were formed along with the continental shelves. The Mesozoic era was around 225 million years ago.
Phase six is our current era. Canada is divided into six sectors which are, “Vancouver Island, Western Cordillera, Interior Plains, Canadian Shield and the Appalachians. The further erosion caused by ice and rain had caused the mountainous regions of Canada to become smoother and smalled in height.
Humans and animals currently occupy this area along with plants and other vegetation.
