Debunking Young Earth Creationism: Why The Earth is Not 8000 Years Old

The scientific method exists to eliminate all personal bias in the discernment of information, so that the final say-so lies with the best available evidence. Valid scientific theories are formed when conclusions from experiments produce models that provide explanations that accurately predict how future phenomena will occur. Likewise, invalid theories are rejected by sufficient available evidence. The argument of a Young Earth of 8000 years of age is easily debunked by an overwhelming amount of evidence.

  • Modern Homo Sapiens are nearly 200,000 years old. This has been verified by the discovery of fossil remains along the Omo river in Ethiopia, which date back to 196,000 years old1 2. If the Earth is 8000 years old, then humans are thousands of years older than the Earth.

  • There were already multiple civilizations that were going in-progress 8000 years ago, including Predynastic Egypt and the Mehrgarh Civilization3.

  • There is an extensive fossil record that shows a variety of different events, including five major mass extinctions that have occurred. The first mass extinction, the Ordovician-Silurian extinction, occurred 450 million years ago. The fifth mass extinction, the infamous Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction that killed the dinosaurs, occurred 65 million years ago.

  • Anorthosite rocks from the Apollo missions have been dated to about 4.28 million years old4.

Even without the help of radiometric dating, the phenomenon of continental drift can be easily inferred by looking at a map. With geological satellite observations showing that the plates move at centimeters per year, a person could use basic 6th grade mathematics to deduce that it took several millions of years for the continents to drift apart, and thus reasonably conclude that the Earth could not possibly be as young as 8000 years.
