10 Amazing Extinct Animals
An impressive collection of amazing animals we will never see.
1. Wooly Mammoths: Extinct 10,000 years
Mammoths are hairy elephant-like animals, with sloping back, huge curved tusks up to 3.5 m. long, tiny tail, a large shoulder hump, unique teeth and small ears. They were adapted to cold weather, and lived during the ice age. Woolly Mammoths lived from about 2 million years to 10,000 years ago, that was 65 million years after the dinosaurs went extinct. They lived throughout the world.
2. Megalodon: Extinct 25 – 1.6 million years
During its 25-million years, Megalodon was distributed nearly world-wide. Megalodon is a very large shark/dino shark with fossil teeth, they’re sized would have been 40-100 feet long or even more. They are known from South America, North America, Africa, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia. They lived during Miocene era.
3. Dodo: Extinct Since Late 17th Century
A flightless bird from islands in the Indian Ocean with a black fluffy down and feathers, greenish yellow bill and black feet and related to pigeons and doves. They’re weight ranged according to reproduction periods and seasonal diets. Dodo birds are now extinct and have died out around 1691 AD.
4. Megatherium: Extinct 11,000 Years
A giant sloth that lived during the ice age.
5. Passenger Pigeon: Extinct since 1914
Passenger Pigeon is the most abundant bird species on earth. Their extensive winter roosting grounds along river bottoms in the Southern Appalachians are recalled in the names of two rivers, the Pigeon and the Little Pigeon.
6. Carolina Parakeet: Extinct since Early 1900s
Carolina Parakeet is the only member of the parrot family native to the eastern United States. Carolina Parakeet is a large colored bird, about thirteen inches long, with a yellow head and neck and orange cheeks and forehead, mostly bright green in color.
7. Atrox Lion: Extinct 25,000 Years
This cat was about 1/4 larger than the African lion, even bigger than the Siberian tiger. It lived from 25,000 years ago to 10,000 years ago in North America. Fossil evidence indicates it had the most highly developed brain of any known cat.
8. Irish Deer: Extinct 7,700 Years
The Irish Deer, was the largest deer that ever lived. The Giant Deer is famous for its size. It lived in Eurasia, from Ireland, during the Late Pleistocene and early Holocene.
9. Great Auk: Extinct Since 1844
The Great Auk stands about 75 centimetres or 30-34 inches high and weighing around 5 kl. It was from the Atlantic. The only species in the genus Pinguinus, flightless giant auks, survive until recent times, but is extinct today. It was also known as garefowl, or penguin.
10. Tyrannosaurus Rex: Extinct 65 Million Years

Tyrannosaurus Rex: measuring up to 43.3 feet long and 16.6 ft tall, the estimated mass that goes up to 7 tons. It was one of the largest land carnivores of all time.

Hi, Julie Ann, how are you?
I was kind of hoping you had included the sabre-tooth tiger. That’s my favourite. But other than that your selection is fairly broad, and I’m glad to see that you included some that were hunted to extinction too, to show exactly the kind of effect we humans have on our environment.
Thanks for sharing.

Why don’t you try to use some correct grammer next time? I may be 40 and still live with my mom, but at least I speak correctly!

Well, first “John C.”, You need a little homeschooling from mommy because you made the common mistake of spelling “grammar” as “grammer”.
Really informative article with great pictures to compliment it princess.

On January 31, 2009 at 3:56 am
Pretty good on the whole but I think you have overestimated the size of the Megalodon. Fossil records show the largest specimin was about 50ft long. They wouldn’t grow to 100ft long.
The size ratio between the mouth and the rest of its body would make an appropriate figure of about 50ft.

Very informative. We wouldn’t enjoy reading this without pictures. Pretty nice job!

Why do people always have to mention “shopped”
They’re obviously not real, unless they had cameras millions of years ago!!
Megalodon was savage.
On January 31, 2009 at 2:06 pm
Did you know that the Dodo was the only animal whose exact time of extinction was recorded? The Last Dodo killed was noted I believe.

Just a question, re the passanger pigeon, the most abundant species on earth and extict in 1914. So how did it get to be extinct? And who decided it was so abundant? I would really like to know.
On January 31, 2009 at 6:03 pm
hi Ian, according to my source, there are a few scientists who estimate that it could have been up to 50 or 100 feet (15.5 or 31 m) long!, check this for some info. tnx –> http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/sharks/glossary/Megalodon.shtml
On January 31, 2009 at 6:32 pm
hi peg, the biggest reason was overhunting, but deforestation also contributed. also, for more info. check this –> http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Why_did_the_passenger_pigeon_become_extinct.
hey guys, forgive me for the wrong grammar because english is not my first language but im still learning! i believe, there’s room for improvement. thanks! pls check –> http://tinyurl.com/01good

I got hit by the same commenter (no 35). I cut and paste the link into my browser and it brought me here. If someone is asking to have their article read they could have the courtesy of leaving a message not stepping on the comment box.
BTW, Cutest Princess, this was an interesting read, however I would never use a parakeet for target practice. I’m deleting the commenter. How about you?

Cutest Princess,
This is a very good article. The pictures were great also. Just one thing though… If you could’ve given just a little more information on each, it would have been better. But you did an outstanding job of writing this. If I would have written this, I would still be researching it six months from now. But as I say, You did an excellent job writing this. Keep up the great work!!!
This is definitely a very interesting article.

nuff love though.
On February 1, 2009 at 10:49 am
I personally like how short it is. Who wants to read an article that is like a book? Love the pics.
On February 1, 2009 at 1:05 pm
very informative, there were a few I had never heard of. Nice pictures too
On February 1, 2009 at 2:57 pm
Good compilation. No way was the megalodon up to 100 ft long tho, that’s as big as a blue whale, no ecosystem could support a predator that huge. Passenger pigeons were wiped out by hunters within a few decades, which is very disturbing, but many of these other animals died out before people got their hands on them. I hadn’t heard of the elk or lion before, those are pretty neat.
People who post “shopped” and “photo-shopped” are using an internet meme for humorous purposes. They aren’t actually complaining about the pictures being photo-shopped, so don’t get riled up.
On February 1, 2009 at 6:29 pm
Oh, would have loved to see those birds. Great post.
On February 1, 2009 at 7:16 pm
aww, that’s so sad..it’s good that most of those have died out..but it’s still sad, especially for the ones like the passenger pigeon, and the Dodo..

Really a different try !! Good .
On February 3, 2009 at 1:23 am
I really enjoyed reading through this article.
I heard about some restaurant serving Wooly Mammoth meat as a high price specialty meat. My understanding is that they harvest the meat from frozen Wooly Mammoths which has been frozen in the ice caps from various locations.
There have also been Wooly Mammoth ivory and bone use in custom made pipes and chess boards and chess pieces. I have seen a chess board set auctioned on eBay a couple of times in the past. So, the Mammoth may be extinct, but obviously its meat and uses last forever.
This has been Stumbled.
God Bless,
Nelson Doyle

Very informative article and excellent use of pictures. I do agree with some of the other commentors, however, that a little bit more info about each animal would have made it even better.
Oh and if you wanted to know the extinct Irish deer is usually known as the Great Irish Elk. I think that’s its official name.

People, the earth is NOT billions and trillions and zillions of years old and we did not evolve from nothing. Use your brains! DNA and RNA strictly prohibits cross-species mutations in ALL species! You cant go from monkey to man, or fish to frog to alligator, I don’t care how many zillions of years you wait! It just can’t happen. Scientists have never observed the evolution of one species into another species. Every species on earth produces only copies of itself, never a new species.
If it were possible (which it isn’t) to go from monkey to man, why are there still monkeys, and why aren’t there any half monkey/humans running around? Why are there both?
The full geological column is not present anywhere: If evolution of the species really happened, then there should be evidence of it in the rocks. Why is it that there is no place on earth where the complete geologic column appears? BECAUSE IT DIDN’T HAPPEN!
Also, at the rate that the sun is shrinking, a few billion years ago, it would have been past mars, which would have melted any planets in its path. There goes that theory.
Just look at a single cell in your body! A living cell is so awesomely complex that its interdependent components stagger the imagination and defy evolutionary explanations. A minimal cell contains over 60,000 proteins of 100 different configurations.16 The chance of this assemblage occurring by chance is 1 in 104,478,296 If Darwin knew about DNA and RNA when he was on the Galapagos islands, he would have smacked himself in the forehead for thinking such a stupid thing up as evolution.
Micro Evolution is a different thing, but it is NOT evolution!
2 different fish may mate and you get a new fish, but it’s STILL A FISH… And a horse is still a horse… of course, of course!
LOL @ evolutionists that try to explain away the existence of God that they (and everybody) WILL be held accountable to. They can have their own opinion, but they don’t get their own truth. What does it matter what we all think is right? In the end, NOBODY will be able to deny the truth, that Jesus Christ is lord.

Neat article. I didn’t know most of those animals but some looked like animals that are still alive today. Don’t you think wooly mammoths must be related to the elephant? By the way, how do we know what their outer coating of skin looked like since all we have is the bones? Do we have a preserved wooly mammoth somewhere?
On February 7, 2009 at 10:38 pm
It seems like no matter what forum I go to, I find ignorant and jealous people. This is a good article. Some people wish they were smart enough to do this. Thanks. Anonymous 1 and 2. Is that anything like frick and frack?
Whenever someone mentions Jesus or God, You idiots get all worked up and go into offense mode. If you would set your sights on trying to understand what makes the world turn and what keeps life flowing through your body and every other living thing on earth, a lot of your frustrations would dissipate. Science just proves to me that there is a God. Unless you can bring someone back from the dead or create life yourself,by yourself then you better get your heart right with Jesus. You can’t understand who and what God is , just like the fanatics can’t understand science.
On February 7, 2009 at 10:43 pm
I bet wetjet had you until he said Jesus. I’d just hate to be you guys if you are wrong.

Some birds thought to be extinct make a surprise comeback.
On February 9, 2009 at 2:49 am
I like this ! Hopefully in a few million years we won’t join this list ! Thanks for the information.
On February 11, 2009 at 12:00 pm
It’s strange that the name of Jesus is so offensive to so many. He came and died for the sins of the world, and some of you spit in His face. Absolutely amazing. It’s nothing new though.
But you’ll accept a atheist scientists claims that he knows more than the creator of this universe and knows without a doubt that we evolved from nothing, yet has absolutely no way to back up his claims. To believe that takes an insane amount of faith, way more so that believing that a supreme being spoke it into existence.
Wetjet is right. Where’s the proof for evolution? And I’m sure wetjet had to mention something about Jesus because of the last picture on this site that says the tyrannosaurs rex has been extinct for 65 million. That’s a flat out lie! Men walked with dinosaurs. Foot prints of man have been found inside of fossilized footprints of dinosaurs, and of course they were explained away. Evolution is the biggest lie that has ever been thought up. It’s just another futile attempt to explain away God.
Every single person on this planet that has ever lived or ever will live will be held accountable for everything they do. If I were an unbeliever, which praise the Lord I am not, I’d do some serious soul searching. Forget what your friends and family think the popular thing to do is. Let them fend for themselves, as everybody must. Without salvation that comes only from Christ, you are flat out lost.
Go Wetjet!
The fool has said in his heart, There is no God. – Psalm 14:1
On February 11, 2009 at 12:09 pm
What about the super shark that has been extinct for 1.6 million years? Where do these people get their dates? Carbon-14 dating is so flawed that all of the equipment should be burned as well as the misleading textbooks in our schools that support it’s flaws. Scientists carbon dated a living penguin and the carbon-14 dating results said the walking bird was 8000 years old! LOL
If you want some real proof, check out this site!

or
http://www.answersingenesis.org/articles/nab/does-c14-disprove-the-bible
On February 11, 2009 at 12:18 pm
Nice pictures, but flawed dates and info. As a scientist, I can say that not only is the earth not millions and millions of years old, but on the contrary, it’s only a few thousand years old. maybe 12,000. And as wetjet’s support for creation, all I can say is go and look at your eyeball in the mirror and tell me how any big bang, which would have had to been so insanely hot that it sterilized and killed everything ( that didn’t exist by the way before the big bang ), created your and your eye which are absolutely perfect. (unless you’re blind…)
Has anybody ever herd of Laminin? Laminin is an adhesion protein molecule in our bodies that holds every cell to the next. Without it, we would literally fall apart into a puddle of goo.
check out what laminin looks like here:
http://foreverandalways.files.wordpress.com/2008/06/laminin.jpg
If you ask me, when Jesus says that through Him, all things are held together, He literally means it.
Science only further proves that creation is a fact. You can LOL all you want at it, but it’s true. There’s not a single iota of evidence supporting evolution. But there are tremendous amounts of data that point to a designer.
On February 11, 2009 at 3:55 pm
Did you know that some scientists believe that Megaladon may not be extinc.t They believe that it may live in the darkest and deepest regions of the ocean. Now this may seem a little far fetched but who knows?
