Top Five Deadliest Tornadoes in US History

A list of the top five deadliest tornadoes.

5. Gainsville Tornado, April 6th 1936

The Gainsville tornado was really two separate tornado’s that hit the city at the same time, one tornado decimated downtown while the other one touched down in the north. The tornado(es) brought a death toll of 203 and 1600 injuries

4. The Tupelo tornado April 5th 1936

This tornado touched down outside of Tupelo one day before the tornadoes decimated Gainsville. The tornado touched down in a town called Coffeeville and soon after hit Tupelo. While just missing the city center it still caused quite a bit of damage to factory and residential areas. The death toll was 223 and 700 injuries. However the death toll may be inaccurate because African Americans weren’t counted in the death toll.

3. The East St. Louis/St. Louis tornado, May 27th 1896

The tornado hit the southeast part of the city and then worked it’s way up the city leaving a wake of destruction. It crossed the Mississippi river wiping out the people living on river boats and then hit East St. Louis. The Tornado brought a death toll of 255 and 1000 injuries. The Death toll may be inaccurate because of the bodies that were lost to the river

2. The Natchez Tornado, May 7thy 1840

The tornado touched down in the town of Concordia Parish, Louisiana. It followed the Mississippi river for a long 7 miles until it finally hit the town of Natchez. Most of the deaths occurred because the river was thick with boat traffic. The Death toll is  thought to be inaccurate because the tornado took place before the civil war and African American deaths were not counted. There were 317 deaths and 109 injuries

1. The Tri-State Tornado, March 18 1925

The Tri-State tornado hit the states Missouri, Indiana and, Illinois.
