known as a thunderstorm or electrical storm is a form of weather that is characterized by the presence of lightning and the sound of thunder.

Lightning is an electrical discharge that happens in a thunderstorm. You will see this as a bright bolt from the sky during a storm. This happens when an electrical charge is built up in the cloud. This is due to the static electricity generated by water droplets that collide with ice crystals, close to the freezing level. When a large charge is built up, a discharge will occur and lightning will be seen.

To stay safe during a lightning storm, here are some tips:

Always stay indoors after hearing thunder or after you see lightning. Wait at least 30 minutes before you go back outside.

If you are inside during a lightning storm avoid taking a shower, bath or washing dishes.

Also, if you are inside during a storm, do not use appliances that conduct electricity, such as televisions and landline telephones.

If you are indoors, please remember to bring your pets inside!

If you are outside when lightning or thunder begins, seek refuge in a car, truck or a grounded building.

If you are out in a boat, go below water if possible. If you are just out fishing, then crouch down as low as possible in the middle of the boat.

If you are outside during a storm and are not near a car or building, remember, stay away from water and tall objects! Try to find a low spot or depression and crouch low, but do not lie down! Lightning can and will travel along the ground surface.

If someone is struck by lightning, get emergency help as soon as possible. Often a person who is struck by lightning may appear dead. They may have no pulse or breath. The person may often be revived with cardiopulmonary resuscitation [CPR], there is no danger to you in helping them, no electrical charge remains.
