Hurricanes Make Me Bug Out
There have been some interesting hurricanes this year… and the season’s not over yet.
I was thinking about it, what if a hurricane did hit us directly. What would we do. I grew up in South Florida and have been conditioned to prepare for hurricanes every year. We live further north and further inland now and rarely have to worry about hurricanes. Now we have to worry about ice storms and tornadoes.
While living in South Florida, we lived in concrete houses. We didn’t have to leave if there was a category 3 or even a category 4 hurricane. We just boarded up the windows and hunkered down and waited out the storm. Where I live now, the houses are made out of 2×4s and a little bit of particle board. They will withstand a category 2 hurricane, but not much more. I would have to take my family away if there was one stronger than that. I would either have to take them to a local shelter, probably the high school, or I would drive further inland and stay at a hotel somewhere.
This makes me realize that I truely need to have a bug-out-bag ready to go in case something like this were to happen. I would want to be able to have something I could grab and take my family away if there was a storm coming that was much larger than I know my house could withstand.
This bag would have a change of clothes for everyone in my family, enough water and snacks to last us for a couple of days and a little spending money so we could live while we waited for the storm to pass. I figure I can keep a small suitcase with these items in the front closet in case we had to leave quickly.

Hurricanes are interesting as long as they don\\\’t bother our lives…
