People who visit Boiling Lake usually have a hot time.

The lake is a flooded fumarole which is an opening in the earth’s crust that emits steam and gases such as carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, hydrochloric acid, and hydrogen sulfide.

The lake was “discovered” in 1870 by two Englishmen working in Dominica at that time and in 1875 a team was sent to investigate the natural phenomenon. Water levels in the lake fluctuate greatly over time as it was almost empty in 2006 but is filled back up in 2009. Boiling Lake is believed to be the second largest lake of its kind after Lake Waimangu in New Zealand.

Boiling Lake is not easily accessible and is a 7 to 8 mile hike over mountains and through gorges from the nearest road. It is reportedly a strenuous hike to reach Boiling Lake and you are sure to get wet and dirty along the way but can also relax in one of the hot springs along the trail.

In 2007, Canadian adventurer George Kourounis crossed over the the most violently boiling section of the lake suspended by ropes for the Outdoor Life Network’s reality television program “Angry Planet”. (Outdoor Life Network or OLN is now called Versus.)
