2011 Hurricane Season Names Announced

The 2011 Hurricane season has begun and the names have been announced.

It’s official, as of June 1, the 2011 hurricane season has begun and the names have been announced.  Arlene will lead the pack of hurricanes that will threaten the Atlantic shores during the 2011 hurricane season.  Forecasters are predicting 6 to 10 major hurricanes to hit this season.

Hurricanes and tropical storms are measured in wind speeds.  Tropical storms turn into hurricanes when winds reach speeds of 74 mph or higher, category levels; range from 1 to 5.  Category 5 is the strongest hurricane and can reach wind speeds exceeding 155 mph. 

Up until 1979, all hurricanes were named for women.  The first male hurricane was Bob, which killed one person and caused over $20 million in damages.  This year’s names for both the Atlantic and Pacific Hurricanes, are as follows:

    Yes, I remember when hurricanes only had female names. I cannot imagine a wind of around 155 mph.
