Iran 2012 Twin Earthquakes: Natural Disaster or Nuclear Testing?

While it is true that Iran is generally prone to seismic activity and earthquakes are not uncommon there, the twin earthquakes that hit near the city of Tabriz last Saturday might not have been a purely natural disaster.
The scientists mostly deny any connection between nuclear testing and earthquakes that often occur near the areas that such testing had place, but it is quite possible that such powerful explosions especially when carried out underground could set off an earthquake in already earthquake prone areas such as north-western Iran.
What is especially suspicious in this case is the fact that the earthquakes hit only 11 minutes apart from each other and were of almost equal strength magnitude 6.3 and 6.2 respectively, when usually the earthquake that precedes a bigger one or an aftershock is of a much lesser magnitude than the main event.
The U.S geological survey quickly pointed out that the earthquakes’ zone was not near any known nuclear facility, but what if it had been close to an unknown one? The Iranian regime does not even hide the fact that it is still aggressively working on its nuclear program despite all the sanctions and threats from U.S and European Union as well as Israel. It has also worked on new nuclear facilities before while denying it only to admit to it later like in the case of its nuclear facilities in Natanz and Arak. Therefore it is very likely that it might have some underground facilities in the mountainous region near Tabriz as well.
I would not be surprised at all if in the near future it gets discovered or even worse if Iran declares that it has conducted a successful nuclear test. The regime in Tehran is most likely working on it even more feverishly now when it looks like they are about to lose its key ally in the region, which is Assad regime in Syria.
Iranian regime would love to be able to announce itself a nuclear power and back the faltering Syrian regime. It would certainly be a proverbial game changer in more ways than one.
Adding to these concerns is the latest report of International Atomic Agency warning the international community that it has reason to suspect that Iran has past and possibly new undisclosed nuclear facilities related to its nuclear program in which they are directly developing a nuclear payload for a missile. The report stated that this information is “broadly consistent and credible in terms of technical detail, the time frame in which these activities were conducted and the people and organisations involved.”
If the world does not head the warnings, the very war everyone is so afraid to cause by any military intervention will be upon us anyway, and will be far more devastating than the results of any pre-emptive strike against Iran by either United States or Israel could be.

Well written, thank you. And thank you for your support.

I looked at some earthquake calculators online. It looks like a 6.2 Richter earthquake is an equivalent release of energy to the detonation of an 80 kiloton nuclear weapon. You could be right on the money.

I respect your article but I think its pretty farfetched, I’m Iranian and I think we have this right to use nuclear energy (Not weapon) and the only country that ever tested nuclear weapons on people is in fact USA! they were just two earthquakes that made our nation sad about the casualties!

Interesting thoughts, Edyta. Iran is like a powder key over there. I would not want to be in Prime Minister Netanyahu’s shoes right now, that’s for sure. But it’s more than that; if Iran is allowed to have nuclear weapons, it is a threat to us as well. Iran has never been fond of the Western world – that’s no secret. A couple of missiles headed in this direction would be a disaster.
Poor Israel is bombed every day. We are truly blessed, but for how long?
Good, thought-provoking article.

Really concerning but not to be scared of as power bases itself on fear, a good write up and shows you how as a high power you could possible get it wrong, as i know it sounds daft but it could be earth quakes who knows… lets hope so.

Are you serious? Iran is highly unlikely to be able to develop a missible that could reach US shores! Even the Pentagon said so! And poor Israel is bombed everyday!? Not by Iran at least! But by Palestinians who want their land back!! Israel since 1948 have expanded their ’state’ with the support of the US! Maybe think about the thousands of starving innocent Palestinians who are suffering, over the rich Israelies for once. http://whatreallyhappened.com/WRHARTICLES/mapstellstory.html

I see the OP deleted my critique of her article, what a surprise… Go free speech! Shame it’s ill-informed free speech!

@ Pacifist
The deleted comment did not add anything to the discussion. Notice that the other comment in which you shared your opinion without insults is still here. I have no problem with points of view different from mine, in fact, I very much welcome them, but insults are not tolerated here.
It is important to me to have a meaninful discussion. That is why I write. So, thank you for sharing in it , as for grammar advice, I would rather receive it from other writers.

Actually it did add something to the debate; an alternative point of view and evidence about the inaccuracies of the article and points of view expressed.
I think you confused ‘insults’ with critique but oh well.

@Pacifist Thank you for responding and showing interest in the subject anyway. Your point of view and the link you shared is still here.
