How Did Earth Get It’s Oceans?
Have you ever wondered how the Earth’s oceans formed? Earth is the only planet in our solar system which has the most water! Read to find out where the water came from.

There are some reasons which could solve the true answer to our question. Where did the Earth get its oceans? Could it be from the volcanoes that condensed water droplets into the atmosphere which rained down on Earth for thousands of years? Could it be from thousands of meteorite impacts which carried water from outer space? Let’s read below to find out!
The Earth has more water than any other planet in our solar system! But the question that lurks around everyone’s mind is where did the water come from?
- So how did the Earth get its water? First of all, during the formation of the planet Earth, it is possible that little amounts of water had already existed. However, most of the water molecules would have escaped the Earth due to the fact that the gravity was low and the planet was smaller in size.
- Afterwards, there was a big boom! An impact which caused large areas of Earth to melt and break as another planet known as Ties had smashed into Earth. This collision had sent mass debris of Rock Vapour around the planet which then created the moon! Click the link ‘The Big Crash which created the Moon!’ to learn more about this!
- So what happened after the big boom? After the creation of the moon, the rock vapour around the planet was left to condense for thousands of years which had the atmosphere full of Carbon Dioxide along with some Hydrogen and water vapour. Despite the oceans that were newly born at the time, temperatures were lingering around 200c. This could have caused to vaporize the whole ocean but thankfully the atmospheric pressure of Carbon Dioxide had kept the ocean in place.
- What about the Meteorite impacts? Did they bring water? Most of the water was already present here on Earth. However, quite a lot of the ocean water had also come from the outer planets surpassing the asteroid belt.
I hope you enjoyed this and learned how the Earth got its oceans! It is quite an interesting question to ask and I hope you have understood it well!

very interesting, nevertheless I believe that God himself put the water there and called them oceans.
