Volcanic Vocabulary
Here’s some new words you may not know.
A Volcano is an opening in the earth’s crust through which molten lava, ash, and gases are ejected
An eruption is to force out or release something, such as a volcano
A volcanic vent is the opening of a volcano in the earth’s crust
A dormant volcano is inactive but capable of becoming active
An Ash-and-Cinder Cone is the smallest of the three main types of volcanoes, having steep sides formed by layers of ash and rock
A Shield Volcano is the largest of three main types of volcanoes, it is made by hot spots with magma that pushes onto Earth’s surface, creating volcano vents
A hot spot is an area under the Earth’s crust where temperature is much hotter than normal, forcing magma onto the Earth’s surface
A Composite Volcano is a volcano formed in subduction zone when rock is forced into magma and pushes its way to make vents to the surface for a volcano
Geothermal Energy is an energy (source) generated by the interior (core) of the Earth
A Magma Chamber is the storage area of magma inside a volcano
A Conduit is the main vent(s) inside a volcano
A Flank is the sides and places where ash and smoke falls on a volcano
