The 10 Worst Earthquakes

- Near East/ Mediterranean – This old disastrous and violent earthquake took place ages ago on the 20th of May 1202. Number of people killed is approximately about 1,100,000.
- Shenshi, China – This is another worst earthquake that took place, in the curst of the earth’s surface. The seismic earthquake dates back to have happened in the 2nd of February 1556. Approximately 820,000 people were made the prey of the violet and massive earthquake where they lost their lives.
- Calcutta, India – Now known as Kolkata, in India, which also happens to be the city where I live now. The Calcutta Earthquake took place in 11th of October 1737 where 300,000 people died due to the disastrous effect the earthquake caused.
- Antioch, Syria –The earthquake in Syria too took place in the 20th of May like the first one but it took place way back in AD 526. This ancient earthquake is said to have killed 250,000 persons.
- Tangshan, China – This is another Chinese earthquake that took place in Tangshan on the 18th of July 1976. 242,419 people were dead in this violent earthquake.
- Nanshan, China – This is again an earthquake that occurred in China at 22nd of May 1927 killing 200,000 people.
- Yeddo, Japan – As Japan is famous for seismic earthquakes, the one in Yeddo, is one of the worst Japanese earthquake that occurred on the 30th of December 1703. About 190,000 persons were laid dead by the disastrous earthquake making so many its victims.
- Kansu, China – Here goes one more Chinese earthquake in this list of the worst earthquakes that ever occurred which took place in the 16th of December 1920 killing 180,000 people.
- Messina, Italy – This European earthquake occurred in 28th December 1908 which killed 160,000 people.
- Tokyo, Yokohama, Japan – As Japan is popular for earthquakes, this one occurred on the 1st of September 1923 killing 142,807 people.
There are some discrepancies between the ‘official’ death tolls in many of the world’s worst earthquakes and the estimates of other authorities: a figure as high as 750,000 is sometimes quoted for Tangshan earthquake of 1976.

Thanks for sharing. There is an earthquake database, which shows where earthquakes are hitting at any one time! My partner checks it regularly, although we live on the IOW!
