Five Important Things in a Geological Field Trip
An article about prior things to be considered in a geological field trip particularly for undergraduate students.
I’m just back from 7 days geological field trip and have learnt a lot from it. Here, I would like to share some important things based on my experience.
- Bring your own equipments- There are some essential tools needed such as compass, geological hammer, and hand lens. These things are very important in order to examine the structures and to collect the data while to record the data, the findings and observations, a small notebook with graph papers is very helpful. Also, stereographic projection could be brought to convert 2D structures in 3D views.
- Know the skills – Make sure you have the skills before going to the field trip, for examples, strike and dip measurements, traversing method, and stereonet constructions.
- Take as much data as possible – Examine every geological structure carefully and try to give details in every aspect studied and more importantly, record everything in the notebook. Examples of details that you should record are the GPS reading, aerial view of outcrops or localities, strike and dip of structures, lithology, samples collection etc.
- Wear the right outfit - Outfit is chosen based on the environment of localities. For examples, wear hat and sun block for open hot area, bring the raincoat if it is expected to rain and wear the suitable shoes.
- Bring enough water and food – Field trip could be tiring and take a long period of time. So, make sure enough amount of water is taken to prevent dehydration and fatigue.
