Five Fun Experiments to Do at Home

All of them use things that you can get at home!

Experiment #1 – A Vinegar and Baking Soda Volcano!

What You’ll Need: Vinegar, Baking Soda, Water (Optional), White Glue (Optional), Tissue Paper (Optional), Tray, Paint Brush (Optional), Paint (Optional), Food Dye (Optional).

Step 1: Mix the glue and water together, just the amount so that the glue is still sticky and not too watery. Take a paint brush and tissue paper and put glue on it. You should make it into a volcano shape. Once it dries, paint it like a volcano.*

Step 2: Once the paint dries, put the model on a tray. The tray should be deep enough so that not so much liquid will spill. Put some baking soda into the crater.

Step 3: Get ready, because this is the most fun part of the experiment. Mix some red food dye into the vinegar and pour it into the volcano…

Step 4: KABLOOSH! The vinegar and the baking soda will create a chemical reaction, causing it to bubble and froth. The liquid will spill out of the volcano, making it look like a real one!

*You do not have to make a model, this just makes it more fun for children. The food dye is also optional.

Experiment #2 – A Coke and Mentos Explosion?

What You’ll Need: Diet Coke, Mint Mentos, Paper

Step 1: Open your bottle of Diet Coke. You should probably do this experiment outside, because it will make one heck of a mess.

Step 2: Get your Mentoses and a piece of paper ready. Put the tube of Mentos upside down on the paper, and put the paper on top of the opening of the bottle. You should make it so the the Mentoses will fall right into the bottle.

Step 3: Pull the piece of paper out from under the Mentoses and run back. The Coke will spray up and about, basically soaking everything within 50cm from the bottle.

See this video for more info:

**WARNING** DO NOT CLOSE THE LID OF THE COKE BOTTLE AS IT WILL MOST LIKELY EXPLODE

Experiment #3 – Catching Criminals

What You’ll Need: A Glass Of Water, Coffee Filter Paper, A Regular And Permanent Black Felt Pen, Tape

Step 1: Cut two strips of coffee filter paper. They should be about 2cm wide and 5cm long.

Step 2: Take a black permanent pen and make a dot on the edge of one of the strips. Take a regular black felt pen and make a dot on the other strip of filter paper.

Step 3: Stick these strips on the edge of a glass of water. Make sure that only about 2mm is touching the water. Leave it like that for around 30~60 minutes.

Step 4: Check on the strips. What happened to the permanent dot? What about the other dot?

Experiment #4 – A Rubber Egg!

What You’ll Need: An Egg, Vinegar, A Cup Or A Bowl

Step 1: This is an easy experiment. Just pour some vinegar into a cup or a bowl.

Step 2: Put the egg into the cup/bowl. Make sure that the vinegar covers the egg completely. You should see tons of bubbles rising from the egg.

Step 3: Leave it like that for about a day. When you touch it, it should be soft. Take it out of the bowl. Now you have a rubber egg! Some people have even dared to bounce it on the floor!*

*If you are worried about getting your house dirty, you should either bounce it outside or don’t bounce it at all.

Experiment #5 – Layers Of Liquid

What You’ll Need: Water, Oil, A Glass Or A Plastic Bottle

Step 1: This is the easiest experiment of all. Pour the oil and the water into the glass/bottle.

Step 2: See what happens. If you put it in a bottle, shake it and then watch it again. What happens when you try to mix them together?
