Earthquake Watch: Alaska Fox & Aleutian Islands Pacific Ring of Fire
Alaska Earthquake information.
7/20/10 Earthquake Update, Alaska & Pacific Ring of Fire
The Fox Islands / Aleutian Islands area in Alaska has been very active. Especially since the 6.7 magnitude quake that registered on Sunday. Finally, today, the quakes are tapering off, but up until yesterday, there have been MANY decent sized quakes hitting that area. I can tell you all about it, but it is much easier to get the idea by looking at the data. So, first, these are links to USGS to view the quakes, on maps:

As recent as a few hours ago, a 5.1 hit this region, and a 3.8 less than an hour ago. So far, it is looking more calm than yesterday, but that doesn’t mean they won’t pick up again. Also, very worth mentioning…these EQs are happening on the Pacific Ring of Fire. Yesterday, there was a 5.1 on Vancouver Island. I don’t like what I’m seeing, but then again, we’ve seen a lot of earth changes (lots of EQs, sinkholes and volcano action)…so its best to not get hyped up, but better to observe what is going on.

*end of 7/20/10 Update*
If you’re an earthquake watcher, like me, there has been a lot to see the last few days. I’m going to dismiss EQ’s in the Southern California and Baja area unless they registered over a 4 magnitude. I am leaving these out because they are averaging an EQ every 7 to 10 minutes still (since the 7.2 on April 4, 2010). If you would like my take on that group of EQ’s, please see this article:
The Southern California and Baja Earthquakes
Here is the current EQ activity for the last 48 hours (approximately). I’m including all the 4+ magnitude that I think are of significance. There are different reasons why a 4.5 may be more significant than a 6+ magnitude (location, depth, frequency), but I want to keep this simple and straightforward. Here is the data from newest to oldest:
4.7 COCHABAMBA, BOLIVIA
5.6 GUATEMALA
5.0 NEW GUINEA, PAPUA NEW GUINEA
4.7 OFFSHORE BIO-BIO, CHILE
4.7 OFFSHORE VALPARAISO, CHILE
4.7 SAMOA ISLANDS REGION
5.1 BALLENY ISLANDS REGION
4.5 CAYMAN ISLANDS REGION
4.8 OFFSHORE BIO-BIO, CHILE
5.1 OFFSHORE BIO-BIO, CHILE
4.6 NICARAGUA
4.8 CAYMAN ISLANDS REGION
6.2 EASTERN NEW GUINEA REG, PAPUA NEW GUINEA
4.8 NEAR THE COAST OF NICARAGUA
5.4 NEAR THE COAST OF NICARAGUA
4.8 PUERTO RICO REGION
4.9 EASTERN NEW GUINEA REG, PAPUA NEW GUINEA
4.9 SANTA CRUZ ISLANDS
5.0 KEPULAUAN BABAR, INDONESIA
2.5 SOUTHERN YUKON TERRITORY, CANADA (This one is too strange to not include, even though it is small)
5.3 KEPULAUAN TALAUD, INDONESIA
4.8 BIO-BIO, CHILE
5.3 KEPULAUAN TALAUD, INDONESIA
4.5 SANTA CRUZ ISLANDS REGION
4.6 TARAPACA, CHILE
5.1 XIZANG-QINGHAI BORDER REGION
5.5 BIO-BIO, CHILE
4.8 FLORES REGION, INDONESIA
5.2 SOUTH OF THE FIJI ISLANDS
5.4 BIO-BIO, CHILE
5.0 OFFSHORE BIO-BIO, CHILE
4.7 NEAR THE NORTH COAST OF PAPUA, INDONESIA
None of these have been bad earthquakes, but the amount in the 5+ magnitude is pretty high, and in a few places. Another thing to keep in mind. Myself, and many other people believe that USGS (United States Geological Survey) are fudging the numbers a bit. See all those 4.7s and 4.8s? It would be wise to assume that most of these are actually in the 5s, but have been downgraded ever so slightly as to make statistics look normal. I have noticed this a lot, and not just the low magnitudes. Almost every 6, 7 or 8+ magnitude has been downgraded, and usually just enough so the EQ gets statistically lumped in with other EQ’s that are a full Richter scale point lower. Get it? Now start watching. You’ll need a lot of popcorn for this show!
