A couple of days, a client asked me what it meant to the A-GPS, because he saw a description of the cell phones said the A-GPS. Well, I think people abundance can also feel confused about these two concepts, so Im going to explain here.

GPS (Global Position System), as most people know, is a technology developed by the military to provide an advantage in the battlefield. The GPS device receives information from four of 32 satellites orbiting the earth. It then calculates the distances from the satellites and derives its location by trilateration.

According to Wikipedia, A-GPS (Assisted GPS) is a system that can, under certain conditions, to improve startup performance, or TTFF (Time To First Fix) a positioning system GPS satellite. It is widely used with compatible cell phones GPS that its development was accelerated by the FCC in the U.S. 911 mandate making the location of a cell phone available to emergency call dispatchers.

A standard GPS must synchronize with at least three satellites to calculate your position. A-GPS are common on mobile phones, where the data link is already in place. The information from the server support can enable the device to provide the exact location of a standalone GPS receiver, otherwise not work. A-GPS is also able to reach a solution much faster compared to the GPS, especially the first time the device is started. These desirable features make the A-GPS rather than the GPS in terms of performance.

Take this 3.6-inch capacitive touch screen GSM / CDMA dual SIM mobile phone as an example. Its A-GPS location server uses your mobile phone as an assisted server via your cellular network. The server to learn the position of your cell tower nearest phone and uses it to calculate your exact position. It has a more powerful processor than your cell phone / GPS and thus makes the calculations faster. The positions of the tower would also be stored in a database for future use to make everything work faster and smoother when the system learns new tricks positions. This also allows you to use your GPS devices inside.
