This is DJ Fly and I am so sorry for interrupting your song, Crank That Soldier Boy, but we have some information that can’t wait because it will definitely affect your lives in a negative way. Alright, basically what happened was that a pipe line exploded at the corner of Golf Road and Waukegan spilling out vast amounts of Ammonia. Also, at the exact same time that was happening, some idiot science teacher at GBS named Mr. Lieberman caused an explosion of Hydrogen Chloride. When combined these gases form an extremely harmful substance. Being the smart dude that I am, I figured out the exact location where the two gases will meet. They will join together at 1095 Prairie Lawn Road. Thank god I don’t live there because they are screwed if they don’t listen to my words!
I arrived at my conclusion by taking some carefully calculated steps. First, I know that the mass of NH3 is 17g/mole and the mass of HCl is 36g/mole and I know Graham’s Law, which gives me the ratio of the distance traveled by the two gases. Also, I know the distance between the two explosions is 3.52 miles. To find the ratio, I divided 36 by 17 and I got 2.11, then I found the square root of that which is 1.455. This is the ratio of the distance traveled by the NH3 gas (X miles) and the HCl gas (Y miles). I then used two equations to solve for X and Y. X+Y = 3.52 miles and X/Y = 1.455. I solve for X in the second equation and get X = 1.455Y. Then I put this into the first equation and get 1.455Y+Y = 3.52 miles. This gives me 2.455Y = 3.52, Y = 3.52/2.455 = 1.43 miles. Y = 1.43 miles. I put Y into the first equation and then X+1.43 miles = 3.52 miles, so X = 2.09 miles. The NH3 gas travels 2.09 miles and the HCl gas travels 1.43 miles along a line towards each other and that is why they meet at 1095 Prairie Lawn Road.
