Genetically Modified Organisms

The term “genetically modified organism” refers to an organism whose genes were modified or altered using gene splicing or transferring techniques. It can be used in food, animals, and other living organisms.

This technology was discovered in 1973 after the discovery of DNA and the creation of the first recombinant microbe. One of the most noticeable achievements since then was made by the Herbert Boyer Company. They used Recombinant DNA technology to artificialy create human Insulin in a bacteria cell.

These advancements have widespread applications from pharmaceutical drugs, to agriculture. Some of these technologies have been applied to animals as well. For example, the glow fish. Engineers harvested a gene from a jellyfish that produced its fluorescent color, and implanted it in the DNA of a Zebra fish. As far as Agriculture is concerned, GMO technology can be used to prevent disease and insect infestation, or make the food more nutritious, or even make the food taste better.

Ethical concerns

Although there seems to be so many benefits of GMO’s there are many people that disapprove of this technology. In turn it may create more problems then it has solved.

CONS: (date was unclear) a farmer in Canada was successfully sued by a large agriculture company when their GMO pollen traveled across the border, and pollinated the man’s crop’s. Also questions have been raised about the safety of the technology to humans and the environment. And tampering with Mother Nature is never a good idea.

PRO’S: GMO technology can be used to prevent disease and insect infestation, or make the food more nutritious, or even make the food taste better. Also the income of food is greater to support a greater population. It also requires no herbicides or pesticides. Many tedious or painful requirements can also be avoided with this technology. For example, something like a banana can be used to deliver vaccines or treat diseases. An apple can contain all of the nutrients a human needs in a day, and many other benefits;
