Fun Explosions
Everyone has a bottle laying somewhere in their house, but have you ever thought about how it can be used scientifically to make an explosion? Here’s three common examples of explosions made by bottles and how its done. Note: this video is for educational purposes only, DO NOT attempt these.
Dry Ice Bomb
Almost everyone’s heard of the infamous dry ice bomb, may it be from your pyromaniac brother-in-law or your science teacher explaining the importance of not playing around with dry ice. No matter the time of day, it can act as a huge amount of entertainment, and scarily enough it’s extremely easy to purchase and make the parts for this. All you need is some water, dry ice, and a bottle. Here’s a fun video of it happening on MythBusters:
Drano Bomb
If you’ve had your sink clogged before it’s likely that you’ve got some Drano around just in case, and even more likely that you’ve got some aluminum foil for those sandwiches that you never finish at lunch. It’s pretty scary how you could take these two things, put them together into a bottle and an explosion happens. All you need are the things listed above and you’re set to go. Note: if by some chance you do try this, do not touch the bottle or its contents after the explosion with your bare skin, because the reaction inside created a base solution that will severely irritate your skin or even burn it. Here’s a video of its explosion potential:
Raw Sodium Bomb
Since sodium is one of the elements of the alkali metals, it reacts extremely violently with water. This is an explosion that you wouldn’t really be able to do without some type of chemist or supervision because of its dangerousness and the rareness of being able to buy raw sodium online somewhere. You don’t really need a bottle in this case because the sodium really shouldn’t be put into a bottle and closed. By the time that the sodium hit the water the bottle would simply explode and anything around it (e.g. your hand) would be hurt badly. Do not try this by yourself or without some type of chemist supervision. Below is a video of it just being thrown onto some water on the street to signify its true power:
