Careers in Chemistry

We use chemistry everyday, though we may not know it.

The oil and gas you use in your car is chemistry.

The air you must breathe to live is made up of chemical elements. Many things we use everyday revolve around chemistry. Chemistry also made the antibiotics and medicines we use, and will help to make future medications and cures. Someday chemistry may be able to help in the making of a cure for cancer, or the common cold. These are just a few of the things you will read and learn about from this essay. Chemisty is the study of matter. Which includes almost everthing around us.

Chemisty would make a good major for me, because I know I want to be in a branch of science. Also, it comes very easy to me and I find it very interesting. Right now I am taking my generals with some other classes at Drury, then i plan to move to Missouri S&T in Rolla (Missouri University of Science and Technology).

Medicinal chemistry is a very needed career. People in this field work with medicines, improving medicines, and making new medicines. I am interested in this career because I still cannot decide between the science field or the medical field. So in this career I can mix the two together. While I am also helping people everwhere by creating new medicines. It also doesn’t hurt when one gets to where they are making $40-$50+ a hour.

I suppose communication could be good for this career path. You have to be able to communicate with other scientists and know what chemicals can be mixed and which cannot. You would have to be able to give speeches and do reports on your progress and findings. You would also need to be able to do interviews and debate on what you know and how it can help and affect the human population.

The American Chemical Society would be a good organization to get into if you are in the chemistry field. They offer free subscription to the weekly Chemical & Engineering News magizine. They allow you to communicate with over 160,000 professionals in chemical sciences worldwide. They also offer a job search, resume review, and a salary comparator. They even have their own insurance program. Though the dues for membership ranges from $68-$136.

Chemistry is all around us, even though we sometimes cannot see it, it is there and it helps us through are everyday life. Whether its the gas in our cars, the medicines we take daily, or what could someday save our lives. It is there, and we need it. That is why this career path would be a great one to get into. To help people and to help the world.
