Wonderful World of Fishes: The Modern Fish

Most fish known today are ray- finned and belong to the subclass Teleostei. They are found in all oceans and range from the salmon to the snakelike eel; from the gigantic ocean sunfish to the quaint seahorse. They are the most prolific group of fish in history. The most populous orders of them, and the most heavily exploited, are Clupeiformes, which include the herring, sardines and anchovies, and 400 other species; and Salmoniformes, with salmon, trout, pike and a thousand other, some of them bizarre. some species of these fish live deep in the ocean, but most are found in shallow oceans or fresh water.
Bony-Tongued Fish

Bony- tongued fish (Osteglossoidea) today are found only in parts of tropical South America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australia. They appear to have died out in most other laces. They are a small group of primitive tropical rivers fish with a prominent bone resembling a tongue where the gill arches join bony- tongued fish are covered with large, mosaic scales. Some have odd talents. The featherback, for example, can swim backward and forward by wavelike movements of its long anal fin. The biggest member of the group, and the largest of all the fresh- water fish, is the pirarucu of South America’s Amazon River.

The knife fish (Notopterus Chitala) is a bony- tongued fish that lays its eggs on submerged logs. The male defends them and keeps them clean until they hatch. It lives in the oceans around East Africa and India.
