Veterinary Medicine: Care of Sick Animals

Doctors for animals are called veterinarians. They take care of animals as tiny as a pet parakeet or as large as an elephant.

Veterinarians who work in cities most often deal with dogs, cats and other household pets. Those who work in the country spend most of their time treating cattle, poultry and other farm animals.

Veterinarians are important to farmers because they often save the lives of sick animals that are raised to be sold or that produce other food, such as milk. Veterinarians also help to keep epidemics from killing off large numbers of animals.

Veterinary medicine helps prevent the spread of diseases that can pass on from animals to man. Some of the diseases carried by animals are extremely serious, such as rabies from dogs, tuberculosis, and brucellosis from cows, anthrax from sheep, and tularemia from rabbits.

Veterinarians have developed ways to keep such diseases in check. They inoculate animals with vaccines or simply spray them with germ-killing chemicals. They also introduced antibiotics and other medicines into regular animal feeds.

Food inspectors employed by the government are usually veterinarians. They test meat, eggs, milk, and other products to make sure they are fit to eat.

Veterinarians receive training similar toe that of ordinary doctors. They must learn chemistry and anatomy, as well as surgery and other methods treatment.
