Top Five Animals with the Most Stunning Eyes
You’ve probably been entranced by eyes – known as windows to the soul – before; but have any of them been from an animal’s? Undeserved to be overlooked, here are a couple of creatures from the animal kingdom with eyes known to astound:
I’ll let the pictures do the talking. Starting with the fifth…
Starting with the fifth…
Owls
Did you know owls’ eyes are fixed in their sockets? Which means their eye movements within their sockets are very limited – so instead they turn their entire head to see in different directions. They have forward-facing eyes which gives them well-developed binocular vision.
Not only do they own pairs of incredible eyes, they also can manage quirky facial expressions…The next up are the…
Cuttlefish
Perhaps beautiful in a different sense are the eyes of the cuttlefish. Not a conventional look for the visual organ but they are known to have eyes that look like a squiggly ‘W’. Despite its deviance from what you would expect an eye to look like, their eyes are one of the most developed in the animal kingdom. (Did I mention they have green blood?)
In third place we have…
Husky
Perhaps back on familiar ground, the spectacular eyes of the husky should be no surprise to anyone fortunate enough to have seen them. Many huskies are known to have the condition of heterochromia – different colored pupils; apart from their breathtaking eyes they are also known to be gentle, friendly and intelligent.
We’re almost there but in second place are the…
Cats
Another common domestic animal – but should not be overlooked nonetheless! They possess some of the most dazzling eyes with colors that vary from yellow to blue; complete with their agile limbs and a huggable body it’s no wonder they have been kept as pets as long as 9500 years ago. By the way do you know the nose pad of a cat has a unique pattern just like a human’s fingerprint?
Finally in first place we have…
Frogs and Toads
Okay, technically they’re different species so this is more of a tie – but a justified one, just take a look. They are known to have iris colors: green, brown, red, bronze, silver and even gold. As if that wasn’t enough, they also have different shapes as well from the familiar round pupils to horizontal-shaped pupils (adapted for day vision), vertical pupils (that looks like a line, which are great for night vision) , heart shape pupils (aw), triangular pupils and even star-shaped ones.

* Another list has been put together thanks to your suggestions! Take a look if you have the time.

Although I don’t find loricariid catfish very attractive really, their eyes are pretty cool. They have an “omega iris” which protects their sensitive eyes in bright light conditions.

Well done. Great way of putting thse pictures together.I too only put up my fist articles yesterday.
On September 18, 2008 at 9:06 pm
Great article. However, you need to change the grammar to read creatures have, not has. “Creatures” would be the plural tense. There should also be a comma after the word “Well.” Sorry, but I am a stickler for correct grammar and believe that poor grammar detracts from the value of the story or article.
I think the owl’s eyes are a bit creepy, but loved the rest. Keep up the good work. What are you planning for your next article? Do you consider yourself a writer, a photographer, or both?

Gratulalok,allati jo képek!!!Very good!!
On September 19, 2008 at 1:09 pm
Wonderful article, pictures and commentary. I thoroughly enjoyed this piece. And the frog’s eyes, I never really thought about that much before, but they look like precious stones! And I didn’t know cuttlefish had a W shape in their eyes! So interesting – exceptional work!
Blessings & best wishes.
Sincerely,
-Liane Schmidt.
