The World of Lizards

Lizards have had a bad press from day one. They are not as ugly as they appear.

The lizard is never destined to be a cuddly pet. From the first mention of the cunning snake in the Bible’s Genesis account, reptiles have always had a bad press and this is understandable given the general appearance of some of the species that roam our earth. The Bearded Dragon, the Chameleon, The Gecko and the Iguana are all no doubt cute in the eyes of their spouses but to humans, they won’t win any beauty contests.

Camouflage Experts

Given the number of various species of lizard, it is only to be expected they will come in all shapes and sizes. The variety is impressive when you compare the likes of the Chameleon to the Komodo Dragon or the Gecko with the Bearded Dragon. Though different in appearance, many lizards have basic characteristics in common. Camouflage is a strong point in the lizard world and some will virtually disappear into their habitat background to avoid detection by predators.

Most lizards will feed on insects though some of the larger variety will seek out something a bit more substantial like small mammals. Most are harmless to humans but a few can be dangerous due to the venom they produce and others because of their size, are well worth avoiding. There are many lizard enthusiasts who will gladly keep them as house pets, making sure to try to replicate their habitat conditions as closely as possible.

The Beautiful Chameleon

The Chameleon is one of the most famous among the reptile family thanks to its ability to change color as a means of camouflage. It also has an unusual way of catching its prey as it shoots its tongue at high speed, catching an unsuspecting cricket minding its own business. The Chameleon is without doubt one of the most interesting of lizards and even within this species, there is tremendous variety.

The lizard family are not particularly feared as are other reptiles, but they are somehow tarred with the same brush as creatures you would not really take home for the children. The lizard is not exactly a replacement for the puppy for Christmas! There are of course some creatures that might match the lizard for looks, but not many.

Lizard Land

The number of lizard species runs into thousands and many of these are almost invisible when in their natural habitat. I still have a photograph at home taken in Australia of a small lizard sitting among rocks and have some fun with it asking friends to “find the lizard”. Some simply give up such is the quality of the camouflage. Yes the lizard will never be the favorite among pet lovers but a closer look tells there is an amazing world out there in Lizard Land.
