The Tasmanian Devil
An article about the Tasmanian devil.
Tasmanian Devils are the largest living carnivorous marsupial in Australia. Their scientific name is Sarcophilus harrisii. Male devils usually grow up to 652mm from head to tip of the tail while female devils grow up to 570mm.Usually males weigh 12kg and females weigh only 10kg. One can identify a Tasmanian devil by the different white markings on its chest. These can be used like fingerprints to identify different Tasmanian devils. They have sharp powerful claws and a backward facing pouch.
Around five thousand years ago, Tasmanian devils could be found all over mainland Australia. However, nowadays they are found in only in Tasmania. Nevertheless, they are found in every type of habitat in Tasmania. Tasmanian devils are shy and nocturnal creatures and hence very hard to see in the wild.
Tasmanian Devils often scavenge dead animals. A Tasmanian devil may travel up to 16 km in search of a food source. Devils will devour the entire prey item, including bones. A male Tasmanian devil is capable of consuming one quarter of its own body weight in a single feeding session.
Females will usually raise two young at a time, and they usually remain in the pouch for around four months. After emerging, they remain in a den for a few more months, before leaving to learn the skills required for survival.
