The Goliath Bird-Eating Spider: World’s Largest and Freakiest Spider
This spider is the largest spider in the world.
The Goliath bird eating spider belongs to the tarantula family, which all of the spiders in the tarantula are fairly large spider. Although the bird eater is the biggest. It was named when explorer’s saw one of these spiders attack and eat a hummingbird.

Appearance
The spiders have a broad body with very wide and thick legs. There abdomen is also very large. They have a very heavy body with a leg span of 26 – 30cm, when fully extended, they can also weigh up to 120 grams. The female of the species matures in 2 – 3 years while the male dies not long after maturity. Males have an average life of 3 – 6 years, while the females 15 – 25 years. They are generally dark to light brown. These spiders look very fierce.
Habitat
The bird eater is found in South American rain forests, this being its natural habitat, and all around the world as they are collected bred. The rain forest is there natural habitat, they make large burrows where they live as they are not a climbing species due to there large size.
Behavior
Bird eaters are extremely aggressive animals that will bite you if you get close. They are very defensive, and if they feel threatened, they will make a hissing like sound. They do this by rubbing the hair bristles on the back of their legs which create this sound.
In fact the bird eaters only sometimes eat birds and they are not a primary source of food for them, although they have to ability to catch and kill a fully grown mouse. The female spider lays about 50 eggs, maybe more, in a silk egg sack and they are around 1 inch in diameter, which is very large for a spider egg. When the spiders hatch, they in the burrow until they molt which is when they leave to go out in the big rain forest alone.
Interesting Facts
- In some tribes the spiders are considered a delicacy.
- They get there prey by injecting them with there venom which paralyzes them.
- They make terrible pets as there aggressive and can be loud.

I imagine the bird eating spiders would tell their kids, “Human beings make terrible friends, as they tend to hit you with the nearest heavy object if you get too close.”
I know I would. WHAM! Provoked, unprovoked, whatever. One less child of Ungoliant to trouble the unhappy world. (That’s a “The Lord of the Rings” in-joke.)
I am SO glad I live in the temperate zone and don’t usually have to deal with critters like these. The occasional giant cockroach is bad enough. (WHAM!)

Interesting piece. I think the tribe that eats these particular spiders are the Yanomami… Seeing them fry these suckers on sticks like shish kabobs is enough to make one pass out.. I don’t know if it’s the sheer size of the spiders, or the fact that they eat them with such relish. And when you see the sheer size of those suckers, it’s enough to make one scream like a little girl..lol!
