The Giant Anaconda: Fact or Fiction?

Does the Giant Anaconda of legend actually exist or is it just the South American version of the Loch Ness Monster?

The debate over the Giant Anaconda from the Amazon in South America relates, not to the existence of the reptile, but to the size that determines what qualifies as “giant”. These amazing creatures certainly exist but there is as yet no evidence to support some of the wild stories that have circulated for many years and that could rival those of the Loch Ness Monster.

Reward on Offer

The Giant Anaconda is generally measured at around twenty feet in length and although there have been reports of serpents ranging from thirty-five feet and more, there is no substantial evidence to support these remarkable claims. One early adventurer claimed to have shot an Anaconda that measured over sixty feet. Some believed him, some did not. The very fact that large monetary rewards have been offered for the capture of Anacondas that are more than thirty feet long, no-one has ever had to pay out due to the lack of evidence.

The truth is that the Giant Anaconda is a mixture of both fact and fiction, or myth. The fact that the large snake exists does not mean there are examples out there of the proportions some have claimed to see. Much of it sounds like the story of the fish that got away. The size is often grossly exaggerated. The stories of the Giant Anaconda are the stuff of legend and make a good storyline for the film makers of Hollywood as is seen in a major movie of the past decade.

Fearsome Creature

The Anaconda is considered the largest of snakes, not just because of its length but also due to its weight and girth. It is basically the South American counterpart of the Python which also comes in large size! The Anaconda can be a fearsome creature and has been known to devour big cats and crocodiles. Although snakes generally have a bad press that dates back to the Garden of Eden, the Anaconda is not a prolific man-eater, though it only the course of wisdom to stay clear. These large serpents could quite easily devour a human in the way it does other large creatures.

The reality of course, is that humans are more dangerous to the Anaconda than they are to humans. No surprise there as man is well-known for being the most dangerous creature on earth. In their own habitat, the Anaconda is a creature to behold but not quite the choice as a house pet. Whether the Giant Anaconda of legend actually exists is still open to debate. The existence of serpents longer than fifty feet is a possibility, as yet unproved. Now let’s talk about the Loch Ness Monster!
