The Deadly Facts About Army Ants

If you picture ants, you’re most likely thinking of the most commonly seen “fire” or “sugar” ant. What people don’t realize is that there are many different species of the ant community. The most fierce and dangerous being the mighty Army Ants.

If you picture ants, you’re most likely thinking of the most commonly seen “fire” or “sugar” ant. What people don’t realize is that there are many different species of the ant community. The most fierce and dangerous being the mighty Army Ants.

Native and most commonly found in South and Central America these tiny predators hide in the deep forest awaiting their next meal. Mostly feasting on a carnivore diet, these ants can eat a wide variety due to their amazing digestive system which can dissolve any living creature. In fact, their eating habits are so amazing that one ant colony can dissolve and eat an entire cow within hours. Army Ants use two front teeth and claws which they use in unison to inject a venom which works as an acid and will dissolve all types of flesh. A favorite tasty treat among this species are wasps and Leaf Cutter Ants.

Army Ants vary in size but remain roughly between 8 and 12 millimeters in length. Their color is typically a light brown, but have been reported to also resemble a red tint. This species of ant is incredibly intelligent and can move very quickly.

These ants are mostly found living underground or up in trees. This is their safest way to avoid being stepped on, which is most commonly the death to many of these creatures. However, as many of these ants get trampled, it is highly unlikely for them to grow extinct. In just one colony there will be an average of 5,000 to 18,500 ants. A single queen can lay anywhere from 100,000 to 300,000 eggs. Most Army Ants will have a lifespan of 3 to 13 months.

The queen in an Army Ant colony is much like that of other ant species. They have one wingless queen who’s life consists of mating and laying eggs. Contrary to popular belief that the only female in a colony is the queen, there are many blind female workers in the group. The rest consists of male soldiers known as Eciton burchelli. The soldiers are a whopping one to two inches long! They have a very important role in their group which consists of protecting the queen, killing and gathering food, and forming attacks on enemy colonies. Soldiers are born with very large mandibles which they use to kill, carry large objects, and to dig. The mandibles are so huge for their body size that they cannot feed themselves. The soldiers rely on the team effort of the worker ants to help feed them.

If you are ever in a known territory for Army Ants, please take extreme caution. These ants will attack any living creature they feel is a threat – and yes, that means you too! If you step on a nest, or fall asleep near a nest you are likely to become their next prey. The soldiers attack in extremely large groups, covering their meal completely as they begin to cut the flesh into tiny pieces. As savage creatures they leave the organs in place, causing whatever they kill to be torn apart while still alive – ouch. So be sure to watch your step or you may become their next feast!

While these “Army Ants” are indeed dangerous, it should be known that they are not the only ant that is potentially dangerous. The Australian Bulldog Ant is far more deadly in smaller numbers than the Army Ants are. Readers should know that there are Dangerous Ants all over the world.

Hello my name Stephanie I am going to Africa to study the African Army Ant .

Before I leave I will do a little research so I know what to expect. Lets see……the

African army ant does not stay in one spot for long it will usually find a stump or old

hollow log to stay in. They stay for about 20 days witch allows the queen to lay her

eggs. When they travel they might have a problem like a crack in the ground but this

does not stop them they just stack on top of each other and fill the gap while the other

ants walk across them. I have some pretty good information but I still need a little more

wait a second listen to this. Watch out these ants won’t kill you but the bites from large

soldier ants will put you in a lot pain and once there jaws close you cant get them off.

The African Army Ant has hook like jaws witch make there head look bigger than the

rest of his body. Army Ants will usually eat insects and small animals but have been

known to eat larger animals. I think that’s all I need to get me started so off to Africa!

Hi I am in Africa know and am very excited to start research on the African Army

Ant. Today I get to go on a safari I am SO exited I hope I can catch the Army Ant that

way I can get a close up look on him. Hmmm better start packing lets see what will I

need. Well I think I will bring a thin glass jar and put some bate in the back of the jar

that way when the ant sees the bate he will crawl in the jar and then I will close the lid.

I think this will work well it least I hope so got to go see you in the jungle.

It’s me again and I am on the safari now, for at least to hours all we saw was tree’s

but we have just found a huge trail of the African Army Ants . I have set out my trap and

now all we can do is wait. While we are waiting let me tell you what they will usually do

when they find food, first they will surround it and then climb onto it and bite whatever

it is they are trying to eat then they will drag it back to were ever they are living.

Anyway there are already some ants crawling in the jar I better go close the lid.

We are at my research tent now and I am studying our ant. So far I have discovered

the African Army Ant is a reddish blackish color and has long legs they can be

3mm-12mm can lift up to 50 times his own wight that’s a lot also it has a tooth like head

shape. This ant is ugly looking and I definitely would smush it if it was in my house.

Anyway I need to let these ants go, I don’t want them invading my tent that reminds me

some times villages in Africa have to leave there homes and go for a little while that way

the African Army Ants will come and go and non of the villagers get bitten. There you

    go little ants you’re free.

I have now been in Africa for 3 days it was fun being here and I have learned a lot

on this trip to Africa but I need to go home now. So next time you see an army ant run

They eat human beings, animals–any thing that gets into their path. rember, siafu is the most dangerous ant in the world. NOT army ants.

  29. Stephanie Says...

    On May 13, 2009 at 3:33 pm

You people are useless I seriously just got back from Africa and you guys are talking nonsense! Anyway I should at least give you the info. Here it is. . .

If you were to ask the description of a Army Ant I would tell you they had a

yellowish body, black hook like jaws, blackish reddish legs and little tiny black eyes

These are creepy ants. Army Ant colonies can have up to 700,000 ants that’s a lot of

ants in just one colony. Also a rage of Army Ants is what they call a bunch of Army

    Ants all together.

This little ant you might want to get rid of but in fact the African Army Ant

can be a big help. It gets rid of pesky bugs. So you can make your house bug free but

of course you would not want them to live in your house. They aren’t the friendliest

things around. In fact according to the Army Ant is one of the five most

horrifying bugs in the world. You don’t want to get near them.

Army Ants will raid other ant colonies but never other Army Ant colonies.

Ants workers are blind and the Army Ant workers rely on chemical trails to find there

way around. They also use their antennae to help them feel there surroundings and to detect the chemical trails.

I am sure you all have seen an ant. There is a many things you can talk about when

it comes to the subject of ants I could talk about the kinds of ants, the number of ants, or

what ants eat. The list goes on and on, but today I will specifically be talking about the

Army Ant. These ant’s were named by scientists because they attack and destroy like an

army does. The Army Ants can can be up to 12mm long and can lift up to 50 times there

own weight. They have hook like jaws with which they can bite you and you can’t shake

    them off.

The Army Ant does have enemies: humans, bees, and spiders and or anything that

invades there space. Army Ants live in hollow logs or old tree stumps but only for 20

days. During this time the queen lays her eggs.

These ants will eat bugs, birds, and spiders and on other occasions they will eat

small animals like piglets calves ext.

Villages in Africa leave there homes when the Army Ants are coming because if

they stay they could get bitten very badly. So the villagers just leave there homes for a

little while. This does not bother them because they know when they return there houses will be bug free.
