The Bonobo: 98.4 Percent Human

The bonobo is kind of monkey. More than 98 percent of their DNA is the same as that of a human…And they are facing extinction.

The closest organism there is to a human that isn’t a human is a bonobo. More than 98 percent of a Bonobos DNA is the same as a humans DNA. They are actually closer to humans than they are to their monkey ancestors. These rare animals are only found in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and are very close to extinction. The Bonobos are hunted frequently, and as a result there’s roughly 5000 to 50,000 left. To do your part in helping these endangered creatures, go to bonobo.org.

I work for the Bonobo Conservation Initiative (www.bonobo.org), and would just like to clarify that a bonobo is a great ape, and not a monkey. Apes and monkeys are all primates but the distinction is very important. There are only three other great apes, and they are gorillas, chimpanzees and orangutans.
