Sea Turtles: Wonders of the Sea

Sea turtles are the most amazing animals. They are the wonders of the ocean. They are running low in numbers and are endangered.

The sea turtles are amazing creatures of the ocean. They have been around for millions of years although they have stayed relatively the same, meaning little or no evolution. They spend the most of there time underwater rather than on the surface.

Most sea turtles spend the majority of their lives underwater, they can replenish their oxygen supply with a large breath. The green turtle can dive/submerge for around 4 – 5 minutes then renew oxygen within 1 – 3 seconds. Turtles can rest or sleep under water for around 7 hours, although the time they can submerge is much shorter.

The sea turtles life expectancy is to be estimated at around 80 years. Most sea turtles have the same technique of making a nest. Sea turtles find a nice spot in the sand where they dig a hole. They will leave 150 – 200 eggs then go back into the ocean. They will be there for around two months when they hatch, most don’t make it into the ocean as the predators are used to this and wait upon beaches.

All species of sea turtles are an endangered species with all the hunting from poachers and the black market business of turtle shell. They are in extreme risk of extinction and we have to help save them now.

Sea Turtles are such beautiful creatures. When we were out on the reef in Australia we followed one while we were snorkling. It was a wonderful experience.

It is a shame that they are now on the endangered list!

I had the luxury of swimming with a sea turtle when I was snorkeling Hanauma Bay in Honolulu, HI. I had gone over the reef during high tide and was trying to get back over(foolish as there was a communications channel that I could have used) the reef as the tide was letting out. So there I was struggling and fighting just to maintain position when I look to my left and there was a sea turtle. For every dozen strokes I would make it would make one or two. It swam fairly close, maybe 12 feet away, and would swim to my left, then around to my right, then back to the left. Needless to say it was one of the most amazing experience of my life.

I love sea turtles! I love how they’re banning people from bugging the little baby ones. I hate it when something dies because of someone’s stupidity.
