Saving the Grizzly
Some thoughts on the future of the Grizzly.
What is happening to the Grizzly is an example of American shortsightedness and is also a prelude to other future happenings that will determine what species are going to survive. Recently a program aired on TV showed that originally land had been set aside for the bear, as its numbers were desperately low. The animal originally roamed much of the great plains was found to have travelled all the way down to the Mexican border. With the expansion of settlements west of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers the bear was shot and their numbers were drastically reduced. Yellowstone was set-aside as the place they good thrive.
From the time they were on the endangered list, their numbers have returned to “normal” levels considering its restricted habitat. But people want to move away from the concept of endangered species to having a stretch of land where the animal can live. Only the opportunity of finding wilderness in the once unencroached habitat is difficult. People are continually migrating away from cities and building cabins and lodgings closer to the Rockies. Certain pine trees which provide pine seeds for the bear are facing a blight and are also being cut down so that effects them negatively; their habitat is being destroyed.
