Penguins Color Trivia

Why do penguins have black and white colors? What is the purpose of these colors?

Some people asks why penguins have black and white color. I learned two different reasons and I think both are facts.

First, it provides camouflage when the birds are in the water. The black color of their back makes them difficult to see from above when swimming in the sea because when you look from top view, the color of the sea is dark.  The white color on their front makes them hard to see because when you look from under the sea, the color  above is clear white because of the sunshine.

Second is that the penguins can use their coloration as a form of thermal control. If they are feeling cold, they can stand with their back to the sun to so absorb heat because black color absorbs heat. If they are feeling hot they can stand with their front towards the sun to reflect the sun’s rays. This second reason is just my idea and I am not really sure if my conclusion is correct and was already proven to be true.
