Osprey
An osprey has taloned feet, powerful claws, and sharp eyes to help them catch the smallest of prey.
The Osprey
Pandion haliaetus is the scientifical name for an osprey. They are members of the pandionidae family. They are powerful for their size and can attack and capture prey larger than the osprey itself.
Physical Features
Bill: These bills are sharply hooked so they can rip apart various types of animals. They need to have strong bills to rip apart the scaly skin of different types of fish.
Plumage: The key adaptation that ospreys have grown to acquire on their wings is that they can shrug of water with such ease. This is usefully for when attacking fish, it helps them to escape unscathed.
Wings: Ospreys have narrow wings so they do not retain as much water when catching under-water prey. This makes it easier for an osprey to get back into flight after it goes for a dive to catch prey.
Legs: An ospreys long legs help it attack fish that are on the surface without being fully submerged. Their legs are also spiny so they can hook fish to their feet.
Feet: Their feet have four long talons each, and are used to get different angles of grasp on the prey. The outer talon can rotate backwards to support a grip on prey when they fly away.
Female Ospreys: There are many different ways to tell the difference between a male and female osprey. Female ospreys are slightly larger than males and females have a very distinct set of brown feathers across the breast.
Where Can We Find This Bird?
Ospreys breed throughout the world. They are notable in Europe, Asia, Southeast Asia, North America, and coastal areas of Australia. You can also spot them in Southern Africa and all over India; usually in the winter.
