Musical Mouse: Science Fact or Fiction?

Is it possible for a mouse to here, understand and replicate sound? Ever want a mouse to play a keyboard? It turns out that this mouse is able to play a note that it hears by selecting the right note on a keyboard.

Behavioral scientists, who were no doubt bored by their research, took a mouse and placed it on a keyboard. To the surprise of everyone, the mouse would play one note at a time. This is tremendous when you think of the animal reflex. It should have either have been startled and ran away or it should have walked across all the keys to make more sound.

Instead, the mouse would simply play one key at a time using both front legs and the weight of the front half of its body. In an effort to duplicate the behavior, the scientists began to play a sequence of one octave, or eight keys, over and over while the mouse would sit and listen.

Then, they would play one note via midi cable through the back of the keyboard so as to not point or press the note in question. The mouse would hear the sound and then walk to the correct note and press it every time! There is no word whether this is just a one time fluke or if there has been research to suggest mice are able to be trained in this way.

But the bigger question, is this Musical Mouse science fact or fiction?
