Mudpuppy: Not a Dog, But a Salamander?

Not a dog, not a puppy, but they do love the mud.

Mudpuppies are not dogs or just puppies who love to play in the mud, but salamanders that love the mud. Mudpuppies get there name because they are the only salamanders that actually make noise. The noise sounds like a dog barking.

Mudpuppies live on the bottom of lakes, rivers, swamps, streams, and ponds. They rarely leave the water at all. During the day they hide themselves in the mud, under logs, under rocks, and under vegetation. At night they hunt. They eat whatever they can catch: crayfish, worms, and snails.

They have flat heads, long tails, stubby legs, and external gills. There body is brown and have blue-black spots. Females lay eggs and guard them until they hatch. That is a unique trait for a salamander. The population of the the mudpuppies are decreasing because of the pollution of the lakes, ponds, and streams.
