Monkey Manners
Animals’ behavior.
MONKEY MANNERS
They are two basic types of animals’ behaviour:
Instinctive and trails and error learning. In addition the higher animals especially show to a warying degree a mental quality which almost defies definition. We call it intelligence the first the incentive, is a built-in, almost machine –like sort of behaviour. When an animal sense organ –its eye, ears, or nostrils- receive ascertain signal, the right action is produced automatically. For example, if any enemy comes too close most animals instinctively try to get away without pausing to work out that this is the best thing to do.
Almost all animals’ behaviour is instinctive but a few species also show a fair degree of intelligent behaviour .this can be compared with the actions of a computer, a very complicated machine which can store a great deal of information in its memory , and when the need arises , sort through it to produce the answers to very tricky problems . Intelligent information also depend on stored facts, and there fore upon learning, but it enables animals which possesses it to solve much more difficult problems.
Mammals show more intelligence than any other class of animals, though many of them do not show very much of it. The most intelligent mammals are in the primates, the group which contains not only man, the most intelligent animal which has ever lived on earth, but al so the apes monkeys and their relation. The more primitive of these such as the aye-aye and the bush babies of Africa, are probably no more intelligent that any other mammals such as Squirrels. They manage to live successful lives by instinct, waking up in the evening in respond to the fading day light, moving around in their own familiar territory in search, and so on. Because they are more intelligent monkeys such as baboon have more varied behaviour than this, and the larger apes chimpanzee, orang-utan and gorilla which are very intelligent have very varied behaviour.
