Long Live the Kings
About animals with the longest life spans.
1 TORTOISE :
Some people think that counting the number of rings on its carapace. This is not true. The growth of tortoises highly depends on its access to food and other supplies.
Some individuals are know to live well over above 150 years. In some cultures the are a symbol of long life and success. The oldest known tortoise, almost the oldest individual animal ever recorded, was Tu’i Malila who was presented to the Tongan royal family by the British explorer Capitain Cook shortly after its birth in 1777.Tu’i Malila was under the care of the royal family all of its life. She died on the 19th of May,1965.
Other long living tortoises:
- Adwaita- some people think that he was over 230 years old (died on: March 23,2006)
- Harriet- she lived in he Australia Zoo in Queensland and almost reached the age of 176.(died on:June 23, 2006)

2 KOI :
Koi or or more specifically nishikigoi are domesticated varieties of the common carp.

Koi’s are known to live extremely long. One famous individual was a scarlet Koi called Hanko (1751-1977).He had many owners through his life the last of which was Dr.Komei Koshihara. Hanako was 226 years old upon his death. Her age was determined by removing one of her scales and examining it extensively in 1966. She is (to date) the longest-lived koi fish ever recorded.
Koi’s are traditional decorative fish in China. The Song Dynasty some types of this carp-like fish were developed.
3 BOWHEAD WHALE:
Also known as Arctic Whale it can grow to 20 meters (66 ft). The estimated maximum weight of this hung animal is 136 tonnes (134 LT; 150 ST), second only to the Blue Whale.
The Bowhead Whale uses vocal waves to communicate underwater while hunting, traveling and socializing.
The lifespan of a this whale was thought to be around 60-70 years. However, discoveries of antique ivory spear points in living whales in 1993, 1995, 1999, and 2007 have triggered more research based on structures in the whale’s eye, leading to the reliable conclusion that some individuals have lived to be 150–200 years old.
In 2007, a 50 ton specimen caught off the Alaskan coast was discovered to have the head of an explosive harpoon stuck deep under the blubber of its neck. Examination determined the 3 1/2 inch arrow was manufactured in New Bedford, a major whaling center, around 1890. This proof that it survived a similar hunt more than a century ago indicated to researchers that the whale’s age was between 115 and 130 years old.
4 BRISTLECONE PINE :
The Bristlecone pines are a small group of pine trees.
Amongst them is the oldest known single living organism on which is nearly 5000 years old (4844).
Bristlecone pines grow in isolated groves at and just below the tree line . Because of cold temperatures, dry soils, high winds, and short growing seasons, the trees grow very slowly. The wood is very dense and resinous, and thus resistant to invasion by insects, fungi, and other potential pests. As the tree ages, much of its vascular cambium layer may die. In very old specimens, often only a narrow strip of living tissue connects the roots to a handful of live branches.
5 HUMAN :
Jeanne Louise Calment (1875-1997) was a French woman she was the person with the longest confirmed lifespan at age of 122 years and 164 days. She lived in the Arles, France, her entire life. She outlived both her daughter and her grandson. She firstly entered the Guinness Book Of Records in 1988, but in 1995 she was declared to be the oldest person to have ever lived!
Calment’s health presaged her later record. At age 85, she took up fencing, and at 100, she was still riding a bicycle.
After her interview in 1988, at age 113, Calment was given the “world’s oldest living person” title. However, in 1990, the title was withdrawn and given to Carrie White who lived in the state of Florida, who was claimed to have been born in 1874, although this has been disputed by subsequent census research. When C.White died on 14 February 1991, Calment was almost 116 years old. She became the oldest recognized living person. In 1993, she entered the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest living person, whose birthdate could be reliably authenticated. On 17 October 1995 Calment reached 120 years and 238 days to become the Guinness Records’ “oldest person ever”, surpassing a man from Japan, whose own claim (120 years 237 days old at the time of his death in 1986)
