Animals continue to amaze us. Here are some peculiar animal traits and interesting facts.

  1. The Basilisk Lizard of South and Central America is nicknamed the “Jesus Christ lizard” because when escaping predators, it runs very fast that it can run on top of water.
  2. The act of breeding for horse is called “covering”; for goat it’s “serving” and for sheep it’s “”tupping”.
  3. Hawk moth is the fastest insect and can reach a speed of about 33 mph.
  4. Ratel or Honey Badger is one of the fiercest, most predatory animals in the world. It preys upon many animals like porcupines, scorpions, tortoises, crocodiles and snakes.
  5. The most favorite pet name in the US is Max, followed by Sam, Lady, Bear, and Smokey.
  6. Hadrosaurus or Duck-billed Lizard had the most teeth amongst dinosaurs. This plant eater had 960 cheek teeth.
  7. The number one breed of cat is Persian followed by Maine coon, Exotic, Siamese and Abyssinian.
  8. An elephant can use its trunk as a snorkel. The trunk stays above the water surface allowing the elephant to cross rivers and lakes.
  9. The Hummingbird, the smallest bird, grows only to 2.5 inches long and weighs 0.06 of an ounce only while Fairyflies, the smallest insects, are only 1/5 of a millimeter long.
  10. The most poisonous fish in the world is the Stonefish while Inland Taipan is the most poisonous reptile. One bite from this animal contains enough venom to kill 100 people.
  11. A young cock is called “cockerel” and a young hen is “pullet”.
  12. Tyrannosaurus rex teeth were often the size of banana.
  13. An Albatross can sleep while it flies even while cruising at 25 mph.
  14. There are only 35,000 to 50,000 Asian and African elephants left in the wild making the species endangered.
  15. Stegosaurus is considered the dumbest dinosaur because despite its relatively huge size, this 3 ton herbivore giant’s brain was the size of a walnut only.

    I just finished your article. Very well written.Animals never cease to amaze me at some of the things they can do. I don’t think I’d want to tangle with a Honey Badger though or a crocodile. That’s why I wouldn’t want to live in Louisiana. Great article!
