Great Indian Bustard

Bustards are three toed birds. The have limbs adapted to running. There are 22 species, 16 of which live in the Ethiopian region. One species is seen in Australia and five in the Indian Sub region.

Females alone incubate and blood. Main threats to the bustard populations are the fsat reducing habitats by cultivation, modern farming methods, chemical pesticides and tourism.

Great Indian bustard is the largest of our bustards, standing over 1 meter. The male is the larger, with a thicker, whiter neck, bustard population is scattered over India and Pakistabn.

Second largest bustard, the Bengal florican ranges from Kumaon to Arunachal Pradesh. Similar, but smaller is the endemic Lesser Flourican. Its local movements ar influenced by the monsoon.

Houbara or Macqueens bustard migrates from the west Asian region to the semi desert areas in northwestern India.

Little bustard is rarely seen in North India. Its 45 cm length it one of the smallest bustards.
