Five of the Strangest Animals Ever
From lush jungles to deep seas, these are some of the weirdest animals known to man.
#5 Aye-Aye
This strange animal looks like a mix of animals with a squirrel’s tail, a rat’s body and a koala’s face(it’s certainly not cute though!). Its eyes also glow in night for better vision. But the weirdest thing about it is how it eats. It comes out at night to feed on grubs living inside bark, by first gnawing a hole on a tree like a mouse with its long teeth, then it uses its long middle finger (up to 3 times as long as the others!) to pick out bugs to eat. It also eats fruit by using its middle finger to grasp fruit to eat, and if it finds no food, it can look for a whole night without stopping! They can be found in jungles, living in conditions up to 700 meters high. Unfortunately, some people in Madagascar (where it is usually found) think its bad luck to see one, and some people shoot it just for that. Deforesting is another reason its getting rare.
#4 Olm
If you ever heard of a axolotl, this is a very similar creature yet to be put on this list. It basically looks like a white-pink slimy snake-eel like creature with little legs and red flower-like gills. It has a relatively flat body because it lives in caves. It is also blind with no eyes (if you don’t count those little black dots, which are non developed eyes). Since it’s blind, its other senses are stronger, making it able to hunt. Also, it has a ear which can pick up not only sound but vibrations, and a organ in its head that can sense light. There are also black olms, which are more rare than the average white ones. It can live up to 60 years old, which is quite old for such an animal. Although not as rare as the axolotl, it is still threatened.
#3 Dumbo Octopus
There isn’t any strange skills about this one, except its strange, bizarre look. If you ever watched Disney’s Dumbo, you probably remember the elephant with gigantic ears. Well that’s what this octopus is named after. It can even use its big ear flaps to swim! But those flaps aren’t real ears. It also can walk using its tentacles. It lives at the bottom of the sea, over 3500 meters deep, meaning that its a very rare sight for humans. There are several species. Some have even bigger ears, others look like pac-man ghosts, and some even have shoe-like tentacles!
#2 Hagfish
This isn’t really a fish at all, more of a eel, but it really isn’t a eel at all either. Then what is it? It’s one of the strangest animals in the world. With eyes that can’t see, several whiskers near it’s jaw-less mouth, and 1 nostril, these strange animals have even more when coming to how they act. They eat dead sea life by tearing hunks of flesh with their biting teeth-like structures. They have also been observed to tie them self in knots to help the muscles release flesh from the dead animal! Also for defence, they can also use the knot method, and can also free themselves by producing slime from holes on their body. Some can fill a bucket in a few minutes. There are several species, and scientists still sometimes disagree with the fish classification. They aren’t really rare, but they are strange!
#1 Blobfish
Now time for number 1 …The blobfish. It’s named that because it looks like a big gray blob with eyes. It was recently discovered near the New Zealand-Australia area. Since it has almost no muscles, its blobby skin is slightly lighter than water, so it just floats along(what a lazy fish, hence the name). It practically just sits somewhere and eat anything edible that passes by it. Since it’s not very well known, I don’t have much information about it. Basically the reason its number one is because of how it looks. Just take a look at the picture and you’ll know why!
