Featured Animal: The Record-Breaking Ostrich
An article about the largest bird in the World, which, beyond this one, holds several impressive records.
“”Record-Breaking?” It’s just an ostrich! Unless you mean something else, hehehe…”
The ostrich doesn’t have quite a good reputation in this World. Its name is often used as insult, or pronounced with a sexual connotation.
To exemplify these dirty meanings, I’ll quote Urban Dictionary (Changes made in order to form correct, although not clean, English):
|
Ostrich |
|
A woman with nice legs, nice hips, and big hair, but no tits. Example: Yeah! I fucked the Hell out of Mary last night! Wow! I bet it was great seeing her naked! Well, she does look pretty damn good naked, but, she must stuff her bra or wear falsies or something, she is definitely an ostrich dude. |
The list of obscene meanings continues, as you can check in http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=ostrich.
However, there are good, impressive, and even fascinating features of this mighty animal, which I’ll generously show you.
In fact, the ostrich is taller than you, is faster than you, and can kill you easily.
“Size does Matter.”
The ostrich is the largest bird in the World. In fact, it’s the largest animal with a semi-humanoid body (walks on a vertical position, with only two limbs touching the ground). Ostriches measure normally around two meters in height, six and a half feet, but some of them can reach three meters, 9,84 feet. An animal with his height is unbelievably tall, and you’d have to totally bend your neck in order to look into its eyes.
However, it’s not only the size of the animal itself that’s impressive. As the largest bird, the ostrich has naturally the largest eggs. These are normally four inches (10,16cm) wide and five inches (12,7cm) tall. Legends are told that these eggs are enough to make about 10 omelets (probably true, though…). Also, each egg weights usually 1,5 (3,36 lbs)-2 kg (4,48lbs).

As seen in the picture above, the egg is monstrous when compared to a normal chicken’s.
“Speed too…”
Ostriches run twice as fast as the fastest humans in the World, at 80kmph (50 mph). Their long, strong legs propel ground with an unbelievable strength, allowing them to run extremely fast. (And yes, with their size, running away isn’t quite necessary).

“Stomach of Steel.”
Ostriches can eat practically anything. Their intestine is 14 meters (46 feet) long if you laid it on the floor. Their necks are extremely tough inside, so they can swallow without danger objects like stones. It is told by her owner that once a ostrich ate numerous objects, like photograph machines, ropes, bubble gums, walk-mans and so on.
“Yeah, it ain’t that bad, I guess…”
And that’s how I conclude this short article, which is far from showing everything this wonderful animal has and does.
