Facts About Puffins

Here are 20 facts about the beloved Puffin. They are such beautiful, intelligent birds I had to write something about them.
They are so delightful in their way of doing things, I can understand what makes them such an attraction.

1) Puffins are excellent swimmers.

2) The female lays on one egg during the mating season.

3) The diet consists of Sand Eels, Herring, Hake, and Capelin.

4) They drink Sea Water.

5) Puffins are not in any way related to the Penguin.

6) Puffins can live up to 20 years in the wild.

7) Their main predators are the Great Black-Backed Gull and Man.

8) Puffins are faithful lovers – they stay together and mate for life.

9) It is believed the Puffin’s beak, or bill, is dull in Winter and brightly coloured in Spring.

10) Puffins often ‘kiss’ or what is known as ‘billing’ their partners.

11) Their black and white feathers are waterproof.

12) They can dive as deep 60 metres (200 feet).

13) Baby Puffins use an outside toilet so as to not soil their feathers or bed.

14) Puffins live in burrows in the ground or cliff faces.

15) A baby puffin is called a Puffling.

16) Puffins stand about 25cm (10 inches) tall.

17) The best places to watch Puffins is the Scottish Highlands – John O’Groats, Durness, and Sutherland.

18) Puffins are rather odd looking with their dumpy bodies, short legs set far back, and small wings.

19) They can fly up to 70mph (approx 110kph)

20) Puffins are not an endangered species but millions die due to oil spillages, they get sick when they clean it off, global warming, trash in the sea, and over-fishing. Over-fishing is very threatening since there isn’t enough fish for the adult Puffin to feed its chicks.

I had tried to write a proper article on them but Triond said that I had copied it from another website…now that wouldn’t be true would it : ))

Take Care, and I hope you’ve enjoyed the read.

I love this! I think the list was just as effective as an article; maybe even more. It certainly contained interesting facts. The stats on oil slicks and bird rescue are gruesome.

There are a lot of people out there that don’t care about the world or pollution and there are so many creatures that become trapped and have no way out. Thanks Marie for the share it’s always a pleasure to read your work!

Fascinating factoids about a very interesting creature. The fact that they drink sea water was surprising to me. And since when is Triond concerned with using derivative info from previously posted material? Clearly most of the articles written here use other sites for sources. Maybe more use of citations will keep them at bay?
    Regardless, nicely put together!
